  • Any ideas where to find a picnic bench.. on the cheap??

    Hi all

I've been looking for a picnic bench to go in the space behind my shed - nice little suntrap now I've cut back the hawthorn. There was a rickety foldable wooden table in the hedge which I'm using but I'm not sure it'll last that long. I've found B&Q picnic benches for £50 (which is excellent in comparison to others but.. ahem.. still £50 and I'm trying to keep costs way down!) but just in case anyone knows of a good source.. I'd be delighted to hear. Keeping an eye on ebay/facebook/amazon/freecycle already!

Feel for you! I've been on the hunt for something cheap and cheerful for a few weeks now and I'm really surprised how expensive they all seem to be this year for some reason.

    I wish you luck!

Why a picnic bench? Can you not knock something up from scaffold planks or pallets? Check dumps (although some have salvage issues) or skips for old tables you can tart up, ask at merchants if they have damaged worktops to get shot of.

Good plans! I just thought a picnic bench as I have pretty much precisely that amount of space between shed and the grassy edge.. But I'll have a look for old tables thanks!

I made a bench out of a bed! It's really easy and the bed only cost €10 and the seats are made of floorboarding (about €7.50)

The head of the bed makes the back of the bench and the foot (cut in two) makes the sides. I don't think it will last over winter but I intend to bring it in when it gets cold.

            Photo in a minute.

I agree with Bigmallly, pallets are your best friend.

I would have to paint the yellow bits brown I think.

(Edit added here to make sure folks knew the eyesore thing was my attempt at a joke.)

I love pallets, I regularly get some free from the local farm and then cut them into planks and store them at the back of the garage until I actually get round to doing anything with them.

There is one online that's painted white & looks better but if it's only for a lottie, I'd go for the first one:
