  • 5.1 Surround Sound

Hi, Yesterday I bought a new TV which has an option for SS output so I tried to hook up my surround sound. The SS system only has RCA/Phono plugs & the TV doesn't..................The TV does however have an Optical output but the SS system doesn't..................after a bit of research I decided to order one of these, has anyone tried one & what was the outcome? Thanks as always.

Is 5.1 the magnitude of the earhquake that happens if you ram it onto 'full'.

    It's O.K I'm off now!

Just so you don't think I'm ignoring you, it's 5 speakers plus a subwoofer..............and before you ask, a subwoofer is not an underwater dog...............

Does that mean you can get a system with a super or hyper woofer?

Nooooooooooo, too many cables, see if you can find one of these for a good price Mal, it's what I replaced my Sony 5:1 system with after a TV 'upgrade' had the same cable issues as you have. Mrs.BB loves it, good sound quality & extremely discreet.

Not any more. They've been banned under the dangerous woofers act.

Cheers BB, It's no more cables than I currently have. The RCA's are currently going from the sub to an old PC which I no longer use so it's just a matter of replacing them with some cables I already have. The sub is in a unit so no cables will be showing.

OK a serious question from me...................

If you have surround sound do you have to place the speakers so that they are all directed towards where you are sitting to get the full affect?

And does it work better if you are central to the speakers?

Here's an example of the layout:

I remember quadraphonic, where you had to sit in the exact correct spot for it to work properly!

Cinema surround sound isn't nearly as critical, if stereo sounds ok then the 5.1 will too. So in BM's picture, everybody on the sofa should get a decent sonic experience.

Ta BM - the pic explains it better than words.

but.............does each speaker give out a different amplitude of sound so that each one makes a slightly different noise.

As per normal I am being a bit thick and I promise with fingers crossed that I won't post on your thread again after this.

Just think of it as elaborate Stereo. It gives the effect that you are actually there. Many a time someone has knocked on a door in a film & because it may only come out of one speaker, I have got up & answered the door.

                            Isn't that an annoying feature?

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

It could be but I just found it funny.
