Is this alfalfa? It's growing in a field up the road from me, it got to about 18" tall and then was cut down and is now starting to grow again.

I had no idea what alfalfa looks like, so it could be ! But it looks like some sort of vetch to me.

( have I just made a fool of myself? Is alfalfa a vetch? )

Great link, VC, thanks. That's what it is.

SP, I've never seen it before, and had no idea what it looked like either. I didn't think it was a crop farmers grew in the UK. It's growing on a field that has been quarried for sand, and recently put back to a field, so maybe it's being grown as a green manure and will get ploughed in.

And now I know what's growing in one of my tubs. I emptied a packet of wildflower seeds (one of those freebie ones) onto a tub last year, and the only thing that came up was this. I wasn't impressed and let the tub dry out and the top growth all dried up and withered away, but it's grown again this year. So I shall nurture it and hope it flowers for the bumble bees
