Looks a bit like a euphorbia. Caper spurge?
Leaves not quite right though - puzzled by serrated edge?
Feel that I know it though!

Someone brighter than me will be along soon

If it is c@nn@bis, I'm sure there are several officers of the law who are members of the Vine who will be paying you a visit, Baldy

Are they single deeply lobed leaves or are they several separate leave blades? Any differences to the colour of the top and bottom of the leaves? what are the leaves like to touch (hairy, sticky, smooth)?

They seem to be planted in rows and evenly spaced out so not your usual weeds

I *hear* that the varieties available today are more potent than those of yesteryear - whatever that means - but the plants look the same - (I'm led to believe) - so I'm pretty confident on that 'score'.
I've just shown the photo to Mrs Balders who has confirmed its non-illegality... (she has a bit of 'history').
I'll have to go up to the site tomorrow to try and answer some of the more serious questions posed byJay-el.

My first thought was some sort of hellebore, they often have serrated edges and reddish stems. Or a variety of euphorbia?

Thanks WPG, that's what they remind me of: Hellebores. Much closer to that than c@nnabis.

It could be a helebore...this is stinking helebore that I have in my garden, similar leaf shape, though no red stem.
