  • Update on the refurbishment of the Gardeners Rest

As most of you will recall the GR suffered major structural damage a few years back and with aid of a few old pallets and other detritus from Snadgers plot we managed to keep it open.

In January this year the landowners put the site up for sale and for all intent and purpose it looked like it would be redeveloped into retirement flats. We the Mods knew this would cause great disappointment for the regulars so we made an offer for the freehold. After much legal wrangling the offer was accepted but the local council wanted the site completely refurbished before we could apply for a licence.

D Odgy Builders have now completed all the building works and the interior decoration is about to begin. We have also manage to get a few out buildings constructed, especially as Lumpy was concerned that the pantomime horse never had a stable.

VC has volunteered to oversee the recruitment of the bouncers and training in the use of the pointy stick.

BB is currently looking at the music requirements ( gawd help us)

Scarlet is making a confectionery masterpiece to celebrate our grand opening

Nicos is busy visiting car boot sales looking for anything that will add to the ambience of the GR.

Scarey is in charge of the furnishings...she makes a mean bench

Bren is currently working on the menu for bar snacks and responsible for recruiting the bar staff.

So there you go, a quick update on where we are

It's on target for the end of November according to the site manager....but we have noticed a few grapes hovering about the grounds, so no doubt some impromptu gathering is going to happen!

We do need some volunteers to help with the gardening and recreating the potager as the workmen have trashed the land a tad with their vehicles.

We're also looking for volunteers to help out sampling their local beers and beverages so as to suggest guest drinkies....anyone interested???

The drinks will be free but you've got to dig the new composting toilets before sampling commences

Doom Bar, a Cornish ale that seems appropriately named given the state of my veg patch.

I can reveal that the Rest will be offering and exclusive range of own brewed beers, most lovely of which is the "Mostly Ghostly".

Needless to say the "nano brewery" was sorted first.

I shall be keeping a beady eye on the progress of the GR .........

Put me on the list of beverage sampling volunteers please, Nicos - my many years of practice should lead to an impartial review (hic) of any (all) alcoholic samplings

You want volunteers to "Quality Control" your drinkie-poos? They are "on the house" as in free, gratis, leave your wallet at home?? In return, all you want are a few composting toilets??? Well, look no further! Mr. Growser and I have just founded the firm "Loos"R"Us" and can provide all the necessary equipment to enable things to go with a bang and at a rock-bottom price too! We can supply various versions depending on your needs. V.1 comprises a hole (personally dug by one of us) with a tannelised board across the top. V.2. is a bit more refined because the board has been sanded down to remove any splinters. V.3 is more up-market due to the suspended curtains around the area so as to provide some privacy. V.4 is our latest and most innovative design. It consists of a hole in which a plastic compost bin has been inserted, filled to a depth of one-third with straw, surrounded by curtains as before but... and here is where it gets a bit special! You go behind the curtains to find ... ta-da.. a swing! You sit on this and do your necessaries then jump off! Ok - we may have to tweak it somewhat but we can plant a mean potager!!
I work very hard so please don't expect me to think as well!
