    Anyone else likes it?

First time I went 3 years ago and we got 3 buckets of honey mushrooms around Roslin. They wer delicious stir fried with onions and creme fraiche. Here I have to mention that at the time I knew nothing about wild mushrooms and had to fully trust my wife. It was good fun, as long as you ignore the sympathetic and somewhat sad looks of the locals

When my wife started feeling sick the day after I wasn't worried much at first. When this persisted for a week we went to the doctor and it turned out she was pregnant with out second son.

The year after we didnt go as the baby was born and we had other things to worry about.

Last year I went to a different place with my eldest son, Gore Glen country park off A7 just after Corebridge, if you're travelling from Edinburgh southbound. Again we got 4 boxes of mixed mushrooms, which had been sorted by my wife at home. Ok, 1/3 were not edible, but we still had a nice stir-fry, and I pickled the rest.

Now the I'm thinking of going again tomorrow. Unfortunately the pine forest at Gorebridge was cut down early spring. I'm not sure about Roslin but will go and have a look.

I suggest if anyone else is interested in collecting wild mushrooms we post our tips and locations here. Besides, I'll be going with my two boys, unless it's pouring, so if anyone wishes to join us get in touch.

Also feel free to share the recipes/preservation methods etc

    Best regards,

    Alex

I love srooming. So far down here (Devon) its been a rubbish season. Not even any St Georges to speak of, seen a fow Puffballs and Blewitts. But everythings just to wet.
I did go for a bike ride with my eldest son on Thursday and found loads of wild Raspberries which was a real tereat.

Goodluck with your mushrooming though, let us know how you got on.

Here in the states we search for the white morel in the spring, people keep their favorite spots hidden. When i lived in germany i found a good spot for the black morels but never learned about any of the others. I love mushrooming. Lawrence

I would be far too worried I was going to eat toadstoods instead of mushrooms. Do you have a book with pictures of them all in?

I dont. My wife grew up in a place where they pick a lot of mushrooms so I do the picking, she does the checking and then I double check on the net

The main rule here - if in doubt, leave it out.

Hope I get some shrooms tomorrow (today actually). If I do, I'll post the pictures here.

Your mushroons seem very early. I lived in rural Herefordshire as a child and I remember mushrooming in the Autumn - "season of mists and mellow fruitfulness" and all that! It's very hard to find fields that have not been treated with artificial fertilisers now and field mushrooms are all too rare! I have tried to explain to my OH the difference in taste between a field mushroom and the cultivated buttons you buy from the supermarket!!

Well, you were right, it must've been to early.

All we found were 3 tiny honey mushrooms, which i am currently drying on top of my boiler. Will try again in a couple of weeks.

It was a good ramble though
