Is a skip what I would hear referred to as a dumpster?
Dumpsters are where I've scavenged pallets and odds-and-ends. Same thing?

Yep exactly the same thing or should I say purpose because they vary in design and size as no doubt yours do to.

Haha!! I love that we all speak English but that there are lots of differences between our English and your American English!!
I've not heard of 'skip diving' before, but I guess I must live a sheltered life .....then again I would be too embarrassed to do it in case anybody 'caught me at it' ..........

It's like when I go to the 'tip' (Household Waste Recycling centre.....!) some of the 'operatives' will 'take things off your hands' and stash it away in their Office .....
I like to think that old adage "one man's junk is another man's treasure" is correct - save our planet...!!!

There's a skip round the corner from here with cctv on it complete with warning sign
I'm not sure if they're frightened someone will steal their rubbish,
or frightened someone will fill their skip with rubbish before they can!
I guess thats gentrification for you, cctv on a skip while the houses are being burgled
