  • I'm sure VC started a 'general ASK thread' a while back - but I can't find it.

Anyway, sorry to burden you good folk on this thread, but not too sure where else to ask.

I got my eyes tested a couple of weeks ago (last time was 15 years ago), and have to collect them tomorrow.

Anyway, I got bludgeoned into accepting all sorts - anti- glare and a whole lot of other stuff, which I can't remember - I just said OK.

The main thing is that they are vari-foculs.

Although agreeing to them - I've since read some people really struggle with them.

I'm a wee bit cacking it picking them up (they also cost a small fortune).

    A'm I being stupid ?

    • Yes, you're being stooopid, Kelvin
I used to have varifocals, absolutely no problem. I would think bifocals would be more difficult to get used to.
If you have any problems with them, go back to the optician

      • I don't know the first thing about varifocals, Kevin. But you can find bad reviews about almost anything online if you look hard enough. You need to really give them a good try yourself before deciding whether they will work well for you or not and as VC said, any issues go back to the optician.

I get it though. Hubby is able to buy his reading specs from poundland but I can't do that being short sighted and I always pray that I won't need new specs when I get my eyes checked because I know it will cost a bit. If I could get mine for a £1, I might not care as much

Been out today. Went to Asda which is quite a long trip for us as sadly not one nearby. Nice day though windy and took daughter to the play park. Did a bit of gardening though not as much as I'd have liked.

        Have a nice evening all
LOVE growing food to eat in my little town back garden. Winter update: currently growing overwintering onions, carrots, lettuce, chard, salad leaves, kale, cabbage, radish, beetroot, garlic, broccoli raab, some herbs.

        • As ever VC - like the wise old owl you are - you just ooze good advice and guidance, keeping us young guns on the straight and narrow path towards perfection.

Even without the new specs - I can't spell 'varifocals' right.

          • ^^^^^ Cheers craftymarie.

Yep, spent many years with the £1 shop specials - and the last couple of years with a pair of specs I found at work.

Total numpty really, but I'm glad I eventually done the eye test thing again.

The results weren't as bad as what I was expecting.

Anyway, this boy will be as 'sharp as a tack' with the new goggles on tomorrow.

                  • Kevin, I also put off having varifocals for years but eventually gave in a few months back. I've had absolutely no problems with them other than I can't read a book with them, still need my magnifiers for that, but they are good for reading labels and short pieces of text and I can see into the distance...always a help! Glad I got them though wouldn't be without them now. Good luck with yours tomorrow.

Been a sunshine and heavy showers kind of day, warm until early evening when it turned cold.

Hope you all had a lovely time!

                    • Cheers Jay - although if I can't read a book with them (or any other text) - then I'm shafted.

                      • ...........varifocals rock...!!!

I was always taking my goggles off at work, getting on everyone's nerves with the constant cry 'anyone seen my glasses ..?'
So, after a long-put-off eye test .......and nearly £300 lighter in the bank account dept.....I'm the proud wearer of varifocals .......
(I still have various pairs of specs in dubious conditions lurking around rooms in the house so I can 'see' ....& am currently wearing an old pair of Dad's which DH moans about...... just if I forget to put my 'proper' specs back into my bag before I go to work, I'll not be able to function without them.....!!!)

Well done on your new 'goggles' Kev..!!

                          • Its probably just me Kevin, you have to get the right spot for reading and if you try too long I find my eyes getting tired. I can use the iPad ok with them and read the Vine ok it's just reading a book or my Kindle that's the problem.
