The clocks go back... You drive to work for a night shift in the dark... You drive home the following morning in the dark... You spend the day in bed... You spend the next six months staring at the crazy people who talk about this mythical thing called sunlight... Oh, plus you get to look forward to winter when at the end of a 12 hour shift you get to de-ice your car before you can actually escape...

                              - your arms look like you've gone 10 rounds with an angry cat from lopping blackthorn hedges
                              - you have folds of kitchen roll in pockets and at home for picking and drying saffron
                              - you remember that living in a north-facing flat is less of a blessing in winter
                              - you wonder whether your neighbours will want you certified for scavenging leaves
                              - everything gets a little more squidgy underfoot
                              - squashes and ropes of shallots take over the kitchen
                              - conkers are perched in the corners of every room
                              - plates of seed and jars of seeds in rice are EVERYWHERE
                              - the graph paper and pencils come out for planning next year
