  • The Law Is An ASS

Someone has dumped / parked / abandoned a car in the entrance to my property.
A dark blue Vauxhall Astra Reg No Y844 KKX
It has been there for three days.
I have phoned Strathclyde Police and reported the matter.
They tell me this is a civil matter and I should contact my solicitor.
They will not confirm whether this is a stolen vehicle, or whether they are contacting the registered owner of the vehicle. The Data Protection Act is their reason for doing nothing, or providing me with any information that would help.

Alice I would be very sceptical about their excuse for not doing anything; it seems as though they're not interested. Have you tried reporting it to your local council; there may be somrthing they can do, such as having it removed. I may be wrong, but it's always worth a try

      Hi Alice
That's a bit of a bummer! Going on from Skegblades comments It is the Councils responsibility to remove abandond vehicles, but they have to put a notice on it for so many days before they can remove it. It may be different in Scotland but worth a phone call to your council I recon. Fingers crossed
It's not the growing old I mind but the growing stupid with it!

Thank you both. The reason the Police are giving me for doing nothing is that it is private property. Can't see the Council being interested. But I may phone my local Councillor (he's quite good) and maybe my MP. It's a ludicrous situation. Imagine you get up in the morning and someone has left a car in your drive - and the police don't want to know.
I'm just mad about it. !

That is very odd. Could you maybe tow it off your property and onto double yellow lines???

Or put a blindingly big notice on the car advertising it for sale for a Scottish, Irish or English Pound....
Depending on whether the car's in good nick or not, that should help to 'shift it'!?
I feel for you Alice, take 'pennies'. Sell it to the lowest bidder....

It's this sort of mindless thing that makes me mad, too, Alice. I have to say I like the two options above. Tow it onto double yellows or sell it (spares, maybe?) If it was somewhere safe, I'd also be tempted to throw lighted matches at it. That would make someone move.

I agree Alice, put a big 'for sale' sign on it! Many years ago a then boyfriend of a friend of mine stored his (very old) motorbike in my garage. They split up, he disappeared, and I eventually got fed up of the bike so asked the police how I stood about it because the owner couldnt be traced. They said it was on my property, I was free to sell or give it away. I suspect the same will be true for you? Good luck - I'd be really mad too.

Yeah, you need to bump it onto the public highway, then it'll get moved pronto

I assumed it was up to the police r council oto move these, very surprised to learn otherwise, but I think blossom's suggestion is a good one. Good luck!

I don't see how you can sell it without the log book - or the keys!

I would get onto the council (push it off your land onto the highway if that is possible) and it becomes their responsibility and not yours.

Or phone the local scrap dealer?

Exactly what I'd do. Push it and block the road, then ring the police to say someone moved it overnight and it is now a public safety hazard. They'll be there like a shot!

Is it worth phoning the Citizens Advice Bureau

If it's blocking you entrance, I would think you are within your rights to move it onto the public road, although how, I am not sure. If it has no keys in it the steering lock will lock on!

Hope everything works out ok for you Alice!

                            Hi Alice,

How terrible, I would call a local scrap merchant you see adverts all the time offering £50 etc for 'old cars'

I can over and help you move it if you want? COuld try towing it with OH van tonight?

Let me know if I can help, Mandy

If the car is on your property surely it is 'trespassing' and has therefore committed a crime?

Are you able to sue the registered owner for loss of livelyhood due to restricted access to your home?

Bet if tried it would be moved!
