SP it's a gentleman's sword stick made by the famous London maker Swaine Adeney. Wilkinson Sword engraved blade and sterling silver mounts, hall marks date it to 1896.

It belonged to my great gardening friend who died earlier this year.

To be honest I too have a bit of a thing for the edged blade, the way the makers can combined practicality with great beauty.

My sword and knife collection never did make it to getting re mounted on the wall when I got married and got our home as SWMBO didn't think they were appropriate for a family mans dwelling. They are still stacked in the corner of my mini office as I do not have the wall space in there for them. The firm I worked for when I was in my 20's had a fencing club so there was a reason for having them as well as the more ornamental ones.

I would love a pointy stick like the one posted above, very James Bond and Avengers like.

You should see some of the multibladed/funny shaped knives etc on sales in the market places over here.
There are clearly no obvious restriction on buying them!
I'd like to think there is an age limit....but buying off a market stall!.....they make me shudder....

Its a whole different ethos these days from when I was young (a long time ago) Every school boy had a shut knife and probably an air rifle. Every Boy Scout had a sheath knife on his belt as part of his uniform. Can't remember them being used in a criminal way though, most crims used a cut throat razor.

I joined the gas board shooting club at 16 and bought my own .22rf rifle at 17. My problem was I couldn't afford a rifle bag straight away so for the first 6 months I walked the mile to the club with the rifle slung over my shoulder and a box of ammo in my pocket and no one batted an eyelid. Now there would be armed police with an helicopter over head, dog units and trained negotiators.

                How times have changed.................

Nicos there are actually very few restrictions on buying knives over here, the main restriction is on displaying them in a shop window.

For my sins when I was in my early 20's I use to be in a group called the Texas Rangers that put on Wild West gunfight shows at shows during the summer months in aid of mencap. So we had a range of guns, rifles, knives, spears, bows and arrows.

I obviously had an interest in being a Cowboy from an early age me as a nipper and then at Sutton United Football club in the mid to late 70's

I have a few of those stashed away in my collection along with hunting, throwing, combat, Bowie, Gurkha knives of a variety of sizes. Christ knows what the old bill would think if I walked into the cop shop and handed the lot in to them, which I guess is what I alt to be doing at some stage or at least suggest that what happens to my collection in my will, when I pass on to the happy hunting ground.

I thought the Ghurkas were on our side SP? My Uncle fought with the Ghurkas in the last war and really rated them. I have his Kukri (Ghurka knife) which was given to me when he passed away, along with the two filleting knives in the same sheath. Unfortunately both this and the Army issue dagger suffered badly in his garage. I was also given a stilletto fish tailed flick knife off my Father who told me to hide it as he had taken it off my younger brother who was abit of a wrongun! He must have thought I had less chance of getting into mischief with it.

Flick knives, sword canes, what is it with grapes and their concealed weapons - you in the leek club or something?

Please note sword canes, flick knives, disguised knives, butterfly knives, gravity knives etc are all illegal so can we move to conversation away from illegal actions please.
