I didn't lock mine initially and although I left nothing of value I got fed up wandering the site every time I went down trying to find where my stuff had been moved to. Somebody obviously found it hilarious to swap things about. Got most things back but it wasted a lot of time I don't have so I added a cheap padlock. As somebody else said, it stops the jokers but will break without much farm if somebody really wants to get in.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I don't have a Lottie now, but when we did, nothing of value was ever kept in it...I just used to hook on an open padlock so from a distance it looked locked.

200 views and only 13 votes in the Poll at the top of the thread with a 7/6 split that is a little disappointing...

200 views does not mean 200 different members. I have looked at the thread several times out of interest even though I don't have an allotment plot.

I built my own shed from pallets and recycled timber (see my thread on the build) and I incorporated a mortice lock and a hasp/padlock.
I have also installed a bleeper alarm that sounds when the door is opened. None of which will stop a professional thief. However inside is crammed and requires some removal of tatt to get at the stuff of any value.
I suspect frustration might result in a fire, but there is no knowing for sure.

And the title of the thread is 'Locking Sheds'. I have a shed, locked, but not on an allotment as I don't have one.

Is a shed that has a lock that isn't locked, locked or not?

If you leave "nothing of value" in your shed, what's it for? My allotment is 2.5 miles away and I usually walk. So my shed contains the basic tools (if I need my tiller or strimmer, I go in the car) not high value but if I had to take them every time I'd give up my allotment.

Those sheds which have been broken in to have (in general) had small portable things stolen rather than large valuable items so (for example) a shed with rotavator, lawnmower, and other similar things was broken into (everything moved out of the shed) but the only things taken were a set of spanners and a trowel

My unlocked shed contained old garden tools, pots, string, seeds, labels, notebook & pen, first aid kit, boots, old coat - nothing of any real value. Its real value was as somewhere to shelter from the rain and to change into my gardening clothes when I called in straight from work!

Does your allotment not have a communal lock up for those sorts of tools?

We used to leave old bits of netting, fleece, a few bamboo canes, an old sharp knife, layout and future plans for the plot ( a scruffy one ...the best kept at home so I could photocopy it) , a few packets of seeds, plastic bags for rubbish and carrying crops, empty compost bags, small bags of growmore, FBB, hormone rooting powder, club root powder, a sharpening stone, cigarette lighter for the fire, sun cream, old twine, manky gloves, bottle of drinking water and a Tupperware of snack bars, loo roll and most importantly my orange pee bucket!
Nothing of value in reality...the rest were securely stored at home.
