  • Five little steps a day :)

Next crazy idea - this one came to me as I was popping brassica seed heads to save the seeds
As I extracted the seeds I realised that I would never ever have to buy these seeds again as I had so many. Also, because I'm sending them into the Vine's 2016 seed circle, I'll be swapping them for lots of different seeds - bonus!
Then I wondered how many things I'd done today that saved money and made me more independent of the shops.

Collected three eggs from the chooks
    Saved kale seeds
    Ate leeks from the garden
    Ate parsnips from the garden
Sowed peas in compost made from molehills

These little steps could include walking or cycling somewhere, collecting something from Freecycle, foraging, making jam or soup, knitting & sewing. There may be an initial investment but our efforts give added value!

Anyone like to share what little steps they've taken today?

    Walked to the allotment
Shifted 13 barrow loads of wood mulch from car park to plot (works out as 5.3 barrow miles but at least it's free)
Ate home grown strawb puree, kale, onion, garlic and peas, though not in the same dish
Saved the trimmings to the compost
    Had Mrs B's bath water

Asked OH to get in some shopping on way home from work( saved me wasting a gallon of petrol AND no impulse shopping of things we don't really need
Used up left-overs for supper from the night before...zazzed up with kale from the garden
Researched taps on the internet instead of visiting several shops miles apart
Cooked some wrinkly grapes to serve with ice cream

Walked to the shops with my trolley.
        Baked bread.
Cut up envelops/letters to make shopping lists.
        Made yoghurt.
Swept kitchen floor instead of using hoover.

I'm sure theres more i do each day, but I do them without thinking.

Not quite on today's list of things I've done but ...
          - found a little place that sells misshapen carrots for horses and they're just as good and also cheap as chips, so were their potatoes.
          - gone down to one car so massive savings there.
          - loads of home-made produce in freezer and jars of chutney, beetroot, pickled onions etc to be consumed in the fullness of time.
          - organised most of our geese to go to a local shop plus two for us and the family to have over Yooltime.
          - used the internet like Nicos to review products and possibly got a better deal as well.
Mr.Bones - hope she put in your favourite bath foam!!
I work very hard so please don't expect me to think as well!

Torn a couple of newspapers into bits for compost heap.

Turned prunings from a tree into a few bundles of pea sticks and half a barrow of little bits for compost

Bought enough recycled wood to repair all path edges on my plot for under £30 including delivery, along with a dozen free / broken pallets to make compost bins; all thanks to our local community wood recycling venture

Ooh nice post, VC. Not sure I can come up with anything of worth.
Does eating left-overs from last night's supper for lunch count?

I need to have a think, hang on whilst I pour some wine ......

Yesterday harvested veggies from the garden for our tea to go with the duck we got from next door in exchange got veggies.
                    Collected eggs.

Today more eggs collected, made gooseberry jam ( now I have acquired jars ). Ordered grow light with the money form sale of chillies (not quite what the 5 steps is about, but I'm happy)

Not a lot today - had some home grown winter radish with dinner & sent eldest to school with sorrel from garden. Recycling, composting, saved some peelings to make veg stock later in the week.
                          Another happy Nutter...

I used tea towels which can be washed to mop up puke rather than kitchen roll !!!

                              2018

I remembered this thread as I picked tomatoes and thought...........in theory, I never have to buy tomato seeds ever again. I can save seeds from these toms and swap the surplus with the Tomato Circle.
I've also been separating the seeds from Echinacea heads that have been drying in the GH.
There's a load of washing drying in the sun.
Shredded some till receipts and envelopes for the chicken run - they'll turn it into compost.
                              Swept the kitchen floor.

That's my 5 little steps today.
