Ok Koky.........As you know I am trying to grow a Potato Tower, which is in a blowaway inside a greenhouse. The blowaway has a fleece cover that apparently protects down to -8c...........at present, the temp is -1.5c inside the fleece cover.............am I right in thinking that you can have temps below freezing without any frost present..........if not, what does the -8C protection mean?
Thanks in advance for any answers.

Ummmm interesting read at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frost I did not know there were so many different types ! I'm guessing that the frost cover to the blowaway or in my case my spacesaver makes it act like an igloo and keeps the inside warmer by just enough to prevent frost building on the plants.

I'm sure some clever dicky will be along with a scientific explanation soon.

Doesn't it have something to do with the amount of moisture in the atmosphere?

That was my thinking, if there is no moisture in the air then it can't freeze. So does the fleece absorb the moisture or just not allow it in.

I would have thought the fleece doesnt let the moisture in Bigmally.

So basically, if there is no moisture present then the temp can go below freezing without harming your crops. I guess the cold does not kill them.

Would depend on the water content of the plant is my guess, succulents can't survive frosts but then a brassica can

I can't answer your question BM but I have lettuce growing in the greenhouse with an air fan moving the air above them -5c and still ok, potatoes lower down with no air movement, lost
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

So that sounds like moving air can't crystallize.

I'd proffer the suggestion that the stirred air moved the warm higher up and the cold fell (as it would anyway), the potatoes were underneath!
