Set it up using the north star, I have been told that never moves
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

Like everyone else says, at this time of year in Newcastle upon Tyne, the sun will rise in the south east and set in the south west. If your compass app says it is setting north west then it must be wrong. In summer it will rise north east and set north west.

Around the spring equinox (20 March) the sun will rise and set at the due east and west points respectively so that will be the best time to check your compass.

I'll check whether I've got my North's and Souths mixed up when I go to the plot!

We could confuse them completely and throw the geoid ellipsoid separation into the equation.

I was also in heavy engineering in a past life, but i must have been asleep at college when this lot was discussed. Cannot imagine why!

You obviously didn't go the Kingston Uni and have Wilf Schofield for a lecturer what a great guy and such a sense of humour, he informed us that his mother was shocked and outraged when she found out he was a land surveyor and lecturer, she though he had a respectable job and was a piano player in a house of ill repute!

Not much call for land surveying in ship building and boilermaking!

Did a bit of site level surveying at Horticultural College as a mature student and after when I changed jobs from engineering to Amenity Horticulture 30 years ago.
