OK lot of reading of books about Asparagus is going on and some suggesting prepping and getting the bed weed free for a year before putting them in looks like delivery is somewhere between 20th Feb and 20th March and I have decided to move the fruit cages down the plot and have the permeant beds behind the fruit cages in full sunlight.

BM I take what you say about shallow root but all the books talk about a trench 8 - 12 inches of 200 - 300mm deep filled with well rotted horse muck, so some of the roots have to go down into that for nourishment.

Not sure which mulch will be best to keep the weeds at bay?

Once I have made the Polo trenches, I will put some manure in the bottom. It's the digging that puts me off.

If ever you have to dig them out, use a mattock because you will soon realise they are not shallow-rooted. Their roots look like - well - have you ever seen the film Alien?
I work very hard so please don't expect me to think as well!
