  • Morning all - sun is shining here too! Hurrah! Getting dressed shortly then potting on and planting out. When the lawns have dried a bit, then mowing. Out to lunch today - 'tis FiL's birthday - he is 94! Yes, 94, still living independently, although he has Meals on Wheels and a cleaning lady comes in once a week to do the bits he's missed and he moans that he can't mow his own lawns any more.
    Have a good day all.

    • Morning everyone, looking nice out here as well. Need to drop down to the plot to open the polytunnel door first thing but then home to sort out some camping kit for next weekend which I won't have time to do during the week, hopefully have a couple of hours or so down there tomorrow. Might try to get some dahlias into the garden though, they're desperate to get out.
      Have a great day..

      • Good morning a bit damp here, at present I am taking it easy before picking up the two youngest grandsons, who are having a sleepover, might have made a mistake yesterday by showing OH a picture of NGs flowers as she asked where did I see that picture, and if she found her way onto this forum I would be in big bother with some of the Grapes or their partners doing pampering and painting when they are asked, she has been looking for a porch and hall to be painted for months. Well enjoy the day and keep safe

        • Good morning all. We had a lovely sunny start to the day but now its gone very dull and cloudy. Hoping for a dry day but I think we are due some showers.
Off to play pitch and putt and some gardening later in the afternoon.
          Have a good day all.

          • Sunny here too....so I'm going to stay indoors and make mint jelly

I've been given some rooted stems of mint with loads of leaves so I need to use them ASAP before planting on.

Funny how you need the juice ( i.e. Stewed whole)from windfalls just at the time when the mint has died back!...who invented that one????

So, I've had 7 litres of strained apple 'juice' in the freezer waiting to get enough mint leaves....
yey!....my kids are going to love me next time they unpack my box of homemade goodies for them!
            Best crack on.....

              • burnie-
Wash and chop up windfalls and remove bruised bits ( leave core and skins on)
Put in pan and just cover with water and simmer very slowly until it turns to mush.
                Stain juice off overnight.

1lb sugar to 1pt juice and add a large handful of chopped mint...then a bit more as it boils.

When set, seal in jars.( it doesn't tend to thicken like jam until it cools)
Some peeps add cidre vinegar pre cooking.

You can substitute mint for chili.

Bit vague but that's the basics.
There is a recipe on here somewhere I'm sure.

Thing is, the apple 'juice' can freeze until you get fresh mint...or you can use it to make the chili jelly.

                        • Have just got around to planting up my hanging baskets. Put the first two out and the heavens opened chucking down hail. The plants now look very battered and sad. Hopefully they will pick up again. Going to a musical thing tonight. Our local mayor has chosen the playlist and as he is of the same generation as me there is a good chance I might know the words.

                            • Good evening, not a very busy day as we have the boy's staying overnight, went over to a friend's house as its her birthday and the boy's were very good, we then went over to the coast where we all had fish suppers oh and I collected a couple of bags of seaweed, the boy's are now asleep and I am off to bed so enjoy the remainder of the weekend. Goodnight
