  • The good old days

Well we all had the good old days, whether it was 5 years ago or 50.Would love to see your contributions on this, whether it was things that were more green, more economical, harder work, funny, the childrens jobs or by todays standards - ludicrous.
As a child it was my job to bump the cabbage off an outside wall to knock the slugs out of it. Seem to remember they were always teeming with slugs. We also drank the water the cabbage had been boiled in and thought it was lovely and a rare treat. What did you do in the good old days?

Yearn for them to get better

I always had to help my dad in the garden & grenhouse - I hated it with a passion. Now I have the same trouble with my son as he never wants to help me in the garden, Allotment or two greenhouses!!

They good thing I do remember are Mums Home made Faggots mmmmm. toasted brown bread with dripping & salt & pepper for sunday breakfast & home made rice pudding done in the slow oven of the Aga - may be that's the reason my waistline is the size it is !

        Hi Alice

My 'good old days' are not that far away as I'm mid twenties at the mo, but I do remember how I used to love helping my Dad work what is now my garden (unless you've read other threads you might not know I've bought the house next door to them).

My sister and I always had the itchy job of picking runner beans and strawberries, but the real fun was the excitment of looking for 'buried treasure' (aka potatoes )

My little boy (now 3) enjoys helping me in the garden, and I hope he'll also have fond memories of picking strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries plus my vege... and then in turn become an avid gardener himself

I used to love standing near my father's bonfire and getting the smell in my hair , and the next day at school being reminded there was a life outside the classroom!
Actually...I still love the smell of a bonfire!

            Smells

Surely one of the best smells is that of freshly cut grass?

A realisation that summer is near and you're outside close to nature.

                Very true ntg.

Used to as a kid but grew out of it. Working offshore has made it worse though as you don't get exposed to the pollen and maybe any immunity is gone.

I love the smell of bonfires too but now people moan that the smoke is going over their garden. We used to have a lovely big field behind us but now it's a mass of houses! Ugly!

I remember helping my dad in the garden, collecting the freshly mown grass (when the mower didn't collect it.)

I also had the weeding job and I used to count how many I'd ''slaughtered'' that day!!!

Also feeding our chickens by chucking loads of works their way-until the fox got them

I loved being a kid, especially in the school holidays as it was always so much fun, maybe that's why I went into teaching so I can still have the holidays
