Birds to keep in aviary

Hi,

Which types of birds would go well together in an aviary? and would different food have to go in for them?

Hi GG,
I kept an aviery for years.
For a mixed aviery(,it all depends on the size of it obviously) , i would steer clear of budgies, nice enough but ever so naughty .

I kept Zebra finches ( a very easy beginer bird and breeds readily) Java sparrows, diamond doves, Bengelese finches , the odd pair of cockatiels ( be carefull if close neighbours as they can be very noisy) , canarys, chinease quail ( steer clear of japanese quail as they are like cockerells and will crow at 4 am ) and severel different varieties of small parakeet.

Most of these birds would do well on a general finch mix with added sunflower seeds for parakeets and the like, easy to make up yourself with a touch of research.

Had my hobby for over twenty years and loved it, enjoy.
But the main piece of advice is do your research if you have miserable neighbours.

Just my opinion but I think its very cruel to keep birds in an aviery. All creatures are entiteled to their freedom.

Yes they could but again, they can be very destructive and rip wooden structures to pieces ( very strong beaks) unless protected, also can be VERY noisy

Bramble i get what your saying but it was my love of birds ( british wild ) that got me into the hobby in the first place.
Whilst i agree with your sentiments to a point these birds are bred in captivity similarly to your hens if you have any.

Again having said that, your sentiments i think played a major part in my giving up the hobby.

Not yet veggie, getting some in a few weeks been working on extending there run, nearly sorted

Might be worth waiting until the Avian flu restrictions are lifted - unless you have a covered run that's big enough to keep them in all day.

yes i think your right its taken a while to build there house so a bit longer wont hurt, hopefully it will be lifted soon
