Yes Cad, I knew exactly what you meant by the term Jazz Funk I LURVE it!

I'd not heard of the track Loose ends but I'm going to buy it now. How about this:

Birdland by Weather Report featuring the very talented Jaco Pastorious
A garden is a lovesome thing, God wot! (Thomas Edward Brown)

Scarey55 at last someone who has heard of Jazz Funk do you recall The Scratch - Surface Noise
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPYNIc_M1ng

There was a track called "Underwater" and for the life of me I can't recall who did it.

I must admit I didn't expect a jazz funk thread..... I'm a jazz musician with a keen interest in jazz funk / modern funk

Currently doing my dissertation on Michael Brecker.

        Gotta check out Lettuce

Stank is great, shame it's just an American College band. One hell of a EWI solo in this but I don't particularly like the patch

The Robert Glasper experiment is on the current modern apex, but you're breaking into Neo-soul there

And you can't say modern funk without Vulfpeck

I haven't heard a lot of the old stuff because I wasn't around at the time, but have a keen interest in Fusion

This is right up my 'Streetlife' By the Crusaders featuring Randy Crawford.

In fact I play in a band that specialise in doing 70s funk with the like of Chic, Gibson Bros, Stevie Wonder, Rose Royce, The wispers etc. I love the music so much I travel deep into the next county regularly to meet my band mates rather than join a local band doing 'other stuff'.

          It's a love thing!

I was trying to pick one track from the Crusaders album Kevin, they're all so good.
Great band list, I guess it's a child of the 70's thing. I remember dancing around my handbag at the Top Rank disco to all those bands!

Here's one for you: Tito Lopez Combo. Not much on Youtube but I heard them in a record shop once HMV I think and bought the CD there and then!

I know the feeling with that one lol, the band rehearsals are 90 miles away from where I live.... but it's all worth it!

Blimey 90 miles, I thought 50+ and an hour or so was brave, but yes the right band and people make it so right. I even took along a singer to Dep. a gig once and she loved it so much she joined up and now drags herself a similar distance just to be in the groove. Of course you don't have to be mad to do this, but it helps. 90 Miles, thats gotta be nearly 4 hours travel for as many hours noodling. You're hired!

Nobody has gone hardcore and mentioned

Sly and the Family stone - Thank you (falettinme be Mice Elf agin)
                    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOa5UOHdwnc

Way ahead of the curve as a 1969 hit single, Also special mention for anything Bootsy Collins or George Clinton graced from James Brown to Parliment/Funkadelic

Me I really went more commercial in taste with The Meters, Temptations, Spinners O'Jays, Four Tops and the incomparable Al green.

That seems to be going more into rare groove - a genre I like but haven't really listened a lot to.
                      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5WgYSRFix0
I still dig rare groove though!

These days I'm going more towards the jazz rock fusion and jazz rap.
                      This band is great;
                      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3tErZ5LUJY
                      But it's more neo-soul.
Lola's day off is absolutely fantastic. they don't seem to gig too much.
                      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-m1sn3qsf4
Lettuce have done a cover but you can't beat herbie's
                      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lqtki6I-VTY
Skip the first 40 seconds, eddie harris playing around with some very early eletronic kit
                      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CI5v3WHy--g&index=3
Seriously though; Brecker. It turns to funk at around 2 minutes.

Yeah it's a long way, but it's worth it. The band have started taking off and we have some pretty impressive gigs lined up.
