  • Smug or not?

All the press reports about fresh veg rationing in some shops because of bad weather in Europe made me wonder:-
Why does anyone need to be rationed to 3 Iceberg lettuces at a time? Who needs 3 lettuces at once?
Why people need courgettes in February?
Why people can't eat with the seasons?

and other things I won't bore you with

My question is - how many of you have been affected by these shortages and have you managed to find something to eat that isn't rationed?

The only veg I'm buying now are onions and carrots, everything else I need is in the garden or was frozen earlier like runner, broad beans and peas.
    Location....East Midlands.

There was a sign in Waitrose next to an empty box: 'special USA iceberg'. Bleh no thanks!

I'm still mostly eating winter veg. I don't really want summer stuff yet.

I've not bought veg in years so it won't effect me at all but when I used to, I got a veg box which was full of seasonal stuff. I eat so many courgettes in the summer that it takes me all winter to feel like I want one again!

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Today's haul from my plot was carrots, cabbage, parsnips, swede, sprouts and various winter salad leaves. Got some calabrese almost ready in the tunnel but left that for another day. At home I've still loads of spuds and onions stored plus loads of stuff in the freezer - definitely no need to buy tasteless stuff out of season

I have to buy onions (white rot on plot) potatoes (not enough room to grow enough) and I've now run out of carrots and cabbage to make my coleslaw (instead of buying lettuce) ! Another thing I buy is celery, have never managed to grow it
Only 3 jars of tomato left so will have to start buying cans of them soon, as well - very rarely buy the fresh toms, though.

Nowhere near self sufficient (although pretty close in summer) as don't have the space & young children are a little awkward at the moment (getting better).

Despite that, the only out of season things we're buying regularly are broccoli & fruit (including things you just can't grow here - bananas, blood oranges etc).

Otherwise it's potatoes, carrots (grow some but not enough ), onions, leeks etc supplemented with chard, spinach, pak choi, winter radish & lettuce, lambs lettuce & winter squash from the garden, & stuff from earlier in the year in the freezer.

Did buy some toms the other day because they were reduced.

Can't face courgette in winter, or iceberg any time of year......
                      Another happy Nutter...

Well I must admit that when I went to Morries this afternoon I was surprised by the lack of veggies. No carrots...I mean carrots? Only beef tomatoes, only white or baby pots. No lettuce in fact a lot of empty shelves. Courgettes...they had none, I use loads of courgettes, even in winter in pasta sauce, ratatouille etc. Like Balders, I have had no real success on the growing front but will definitely be trying again. Oh should have said they had plenty sprouts, which I love, but I wonder why they had so many!

I will absolutely not buy courgettes ever. They grow like weeds on our allotment. Don't like iceberg lettuce.

We are not self sufficient, especially after last years family problems, but we still did pretty well.
I still have tomatoes, flageolets, broad beans, and loads of French and runner beans in the freezer along with parsnips and celeriac, all of which we did really well with. And one and a half metal rubbish bins of potatoes. Oh yes and three large winter squash.

Really silly for people to get uptight about not being able to out of season veg. Buy the seasonal veg and stuff that is grown in UK. Swedes, cabbage, carrots, leeks, onions.

We lost all our leeks to rust this year and I can't tell you how much it hurts to have to buy them!!!
