  • grass in my free topsoil bags

    Hi
I picked up free 15 topsoil bags form someone on Gumtree. They looked like great soil on the picture, but when opened it at allotment they have loads of grass in it too. My question is, will the grass dir in the bags if I leave them for a few weeks?
    Thanks

Hello grace and welcome to the Grapevine.
Does the grass have roots and, if so, are they long stringy white ones?

      Thanks for welcome.
Not long and stringy, more short clumps.

Hi Grace, welcome to the Vine
If you want to use it now just pick out the grass clumps at the moment and see how you get on, other weeds may very well establish themselves, some can be viable for many many years once exposed. (Long stringy white roots indicate couch grass/twitch which you wouldn't want to introduce into your growing area so it's looking good from that point of view
In the unlikely situation that you don't need the soil yet just cover it with a light proof membrane for as long as you can, it could be cardboard, newspapers, weed membrane, plastic etc that will prevent weed growth. You can also do this on the bed of course.
There's loads of info about weeds here if you need it..

Hand-fork out as many clumps as you can then do as johnjohn says. Any grass seeds in it will germinate given enough light so just keep on top of the job. You could get some mushroom compost and put it on top of the soil after you've spread it on your soil to act as a mulch and help keep any weeds down.
I work very hard so please don't expect me to think as well!
