  • Can't save files to disk

Fairly new PC with Windows 10 and just tried to back-up some files. Inserted unused CD-RW into drawer, closed it, tried to drag-and drop files into the drive but keep getting message that directory name is invalid, insert disc or create link in DVDRW drive. Looked up how to do it and should get a window with choices including burn - nope! Disc keeps ejecting no matter what I do. Drive plays music CDs so why won't it let me copy my files?
I work very hard so please don't expect me to think as well!

Just wondering if you need some burning software to save data on a CD.

Sorry haven't followed the links above but maybe try renaming the file first before attempting to save to disc, even if it's just adding an x at the end of the name. It worked for me in the past, I appreciate how frustrating it is.

Pretty basic question, but are you putting the disc into the correct drawer? My PC has two drawers, one for <play> and one for <write to disc>. Also, check it is a CD disc, not a DVD disc.

It's ages since I've used CDRW as I turned to memory sticks several years ago. Do the CDRW discs accept every format, or do you need music formatted ones for music and regular formatted ones for word, excel files?

Thanks Bigmally, but when I looked at the link info I don't get any window showing. I only have the one drawer but, looking at it, it says DVD R/RW and underneath that it says R DL. A post I did on another site says it might only write to DVD disks. I've also tried my memory stick and that won't work either. I'll try again with one document instead of a lot and see how it goes. Thanks.

Hey - managed to save my docs onto my memory stick using drag-and-drop method with either single files or single folders. At least I have them backed-up. Tried formatting the disk but message says Windows could not complete it. BUM!

Do you have a program called Nero? It's usually bundled with Windows. If you play about with it I think you will find options to burn files onto disk.

Knowing you MissMT I think you should check that the disk is actually writable - have ou got any other disks you could try?
If yo uright click on the disk when its inserted, then select 'Properties' then 'Security' have a look to see whether the user you are logged in as has got Full Control, Write and or Modify permissions - if not then the disk is either damaged or has been 'closed' so it can't be written to anymore.
Has it been a while since you last managed to write data to a DVD disk?

What did you do differently this time to make it work?

It was an up and down process but you know me from olden times when T.A.R.T.S first began. Good job I wasn't born in Fulham!
