It wouldn't be red ants would it? I got bitten a while ago, felt it and looked down, unfortunately hadn't got my glasses but it didn't seem winged and it was reddish, whatever it was.
Didn't react as badly as you, but my calf swelled up, horrible hard area behind the bite and the itching was terrible for at least a week.

I've posted some photos of my feet (you luck lot!) on my blog. I pretty cheesed off - forgive the pun, because I'm pretty much house-bound for the weekend at least - on nurses (and wife's) orders!
Whatever it was, I wish I'd squished it now!!A simple dude trying to grow veg. http://haywayne.blogspot.com/

should have made it a bit clearer, both british mossies are Anopheline mosquitoes (An. plumbeus and An. atroparvus) and are quite capable of carrying both Plasmodium vivax and P. falciparum. there are over 60 species of Anopheles mosquitoes that can transmit malarial parasites worldwide. you are quite right that it is only the female of the species that transmits the disease.Kernow rag nevra

Thanks for all the well-wishes, appreciate it.
Danmed annoying more than anything, it's started to go down a bit, but it's all starting to bruise now (see attached piccie). Just miffed that I had to stay away from the plot all weekend (and for a fews days yet I'd wager!). Anyhoo, my first ever tomato showed it's face, so there is some good that has come of this weekend!
Quite a few people have suggested it's a horse fly, but I thought they were huge blummin things. Whatever it was that bit me was no bigger than a large ant.Attached FilesLast edited by HeyWayne; 05-08-2007, 05:42 PM.A simple dude trying to grow veg. http://haywayne.blogspot.com/

I react badly to most insect bites and so does my son...something has a munch at him the other night, and he came up with large angry looking welts on his back and we were called into the office at his nursery to explain them! How can a woman be expected to be happy with a man who insists on treating her as if she were a perfectly normal human being.”
