Have seen them but my sons are a bit too old to be entertained by that. How long did the names last?

Oh, I thought the name was visible on the cotyledons (think that's what they are called - the bean bits that look like the first leaves) when the bean first grew. Bet your children were disappointed then, that is a pity.

Oh dear. I sowed Brandywine tomatoes this year and the boys selected a seedling each at first potting on time. They were labelled and a note made of which plant was which. Both boys took great interest in the plants growth - comparing whose was tallest, first to flower etc.

Both (they are 11 and 16) were almost in tears when we had to ditch the lot due to blight. Only consolation for them was that younger son grows dwarf beans and elder one is trying to grow melons so they had other plants to monitor but sadly without the competition of the tomatoes!

Might be worth yours sowing a sunflower seed each next year and putting a tag on with their name, less expensive than those kits methinks!

Ok- way to make up to them then......If you are growing courgettes, scratch their name onto a 3-4" courgette and stand back!!!!
In a couple of weeks you'll have 2 marrows with their names on
                Dead easy!!!

                    Surprising!

                    Hello from Barcelona!

This summer my sister went to Scotland and brought me a "Grow your own name" bean. I planted it and waited for as long as one month. Finally I saw that some roots were coming off the pot. During the following days the bean began coming off the pot too. Surprised, I decided to unplant the bean and I realised that the leaves were growing in the bottom of the pot. I was so stranged that I explained it to a friend who is studing farming and he told me that this is very uncommon, because plants always detect gravity. He wants to explain that to their teachers, but I need some help about this plant.

Does anyone know which species of plant is this bean?

                    Thank you all!!!

I bought a couple of these beans from Poundstretcher last year. They weren't grow your own name but had words like 'peace', 'love' etc on them. The words did indeed appear and my children were suitably impressed. The plants themselves never came to much though!

I have also seen this done with pumpkins, although it was a smiley face, looked very sinister.
