I was randomly searching for the etymology and meaning of a forename and came upon this site. Ignore the fact that it is designed for finding baby's names, and type in your name. Not only do you get the origin and meaning of the name, but if you scroll down a bit, there is a graph of how popular the name is.

My name reached the peak of popularity in the 1940's at a low 1,141 per million babies (don't know if that includes both boys and girls), and no, I'm not quite that old (but almost )

When I took my children to parties and stayed to help out, when picking up time came and someone said "Jane" 5+ heads would turn. Definitely a generational thing.

I was named after an aunt 2 generations before me. So I assume my name has been popular for a long time. I used to hate it as being old fashioned but now love it as being feminine. Even though I'm a bit of a tom boy I still like to dress up sometimes.

My name was popular in the 1880's.

There were 5 of us Jane's in my year. In Domestic Science we had to sew aprons for cookery with our initials on the bib. On top of the 5 Janes, 3 of whom had the same last initial there were the Jennies and Judiths, some of whom had the same last initial. The Domestic Science teacher whittled us down to those who had a middle name putting their middle initial in. That left me with no middle name. To distinguish me from the other Janes and Judiths/Jennies with the same last initial I was designated JanieB and that has stayed with me for the rest of my life. I even married a man whose surname began with B.

By the time I was 25 I'd only ever met two others with my name, both were in classes I attended, and one spelled hers differently.... ��
