Something that I thought was a butternut squash started to grow where my spuds have been planted in Bed 4 Two weeks later it looks like this

In the morning the yellow flower was open and it was massive, but had closed up by time I went home at 1 in the afternoon.

I moved it off Bed 2 and dug out the spuds and covered the bed ready for winter, then put it back so it can wonder over the adjacent bed 2.

But what's growing does not look like a butternut squash

I have a similar plant growing. It came from some seeds I was given that were just listed as pumpkins Mine looks exactly like yours so I'm asuming its some kind of pumpkin?

Could be, I put my own compost into the bottom of the holes I augured for the potatoes and last year I put the inners of pumpkins into the dalek perhaps they didn't rot down completely !!

I've got tatties growing all over the place from peelings or missed harvest, just take them as a free meal.

I'm going to let it grow, I have too it deserves to live, but it's going to be interesting to see if it is a Pumpkin as I have not seen them grow before and suspected they had that Beefsteak tomato shape up front and not that it develops later before they turn orange.

Whatever it is there are a number of them growing under those massive spiky leafs

The fruit looks like a Gem Squash, but the plant looks more vigorous than my Gem Squash plants. If it is a Gem Squash the fruit gets slightly larger than a cricket ball and goes dark green. If your fruit gets bigger than that it isn't a Gem Squash

I think squash rather than pumpkin but could be either. Look for a colour change to know when ripe and good to harvest. Might be enormous by then!

That's most likely what it is. What did those pumpkins look like?
