I am learning many things from this gardening lark. Not least of which is humility.

I have always had a rather snooty attitude towards wildlife in the uk, make no mistake I love it all, otherwise I wouldn't live where I do, but after a life in africa uk wildlife just can't compare, at least that's what my inner mind has been telling myself despite some fairly spectacular exceptions since I came back.

then yesterday I came across something I would call a stinkbug, not knowing they existed in the uk I researched it briefly, turned out to be a red legged shield bug, apparently common here, along with a few hundred similar bugs of that family.

I have learned quite a bit about our local insect life too. They may be small, but they're not insignificant.

Size isn't everything!
Taking time to just stand and observe the insect life that lives on plants, watching the bees on the flowers and how they collect pollen, the tiny movements in the grass and soil, how a worm moves and buries itself - its easy to be distracted in a garden.

Isn't it just. My plants, both flowers and veggies, were intended to be in beds and pt by now but haven't got there this year. They are in containers on the patio immediately outside my kitchen window. I can sit here and watch the different insects pollinate the flowers. Further down the garden are a buddleia, 2 cherry trees and a viburnum. They all attract butterflies. I don't have any brassicas in at the mo so the white ones don't worry me yet!

I have two big buddleia plants/trees in my garden. I was walking around with the dogs and the ground just erupted with butterflies, mostly peacocks but there were other sorts and a couple of hummingbird hawk moths, I just stood there in wonderment as they just floated around me. Almost got emotional for a minute

Thats exactly how i feel- every time scarey55- they never cease to amaze me either -I have the same in my garden butterflies, bumblebees and hummingbird hawk moths, i feel so blessed to see them they truly are the most wonderous creatures

I spotted a Red Admiral heading for my log pile JanieB- as he/she went in I saw how he/she got settled by hanging upside down under the log, moments earlier was feeding on the red valerian - then totally camouflaged under the log, till the shower passed

No, they book into one of my B & B's (Bee n Bees) here in my garden
