Fruit Trees - North East Scotland

Hi,

Im looking for advice on growing fruit trees. I have 10 plots 13 ft x 13 ft and I'm interested in growing apple, plum, pear and cherry trees.

The advice I'm after are which variety of each tree are suitable for growing in North East Scotlands climate - I'm looking to plant by October ? How many trees should I plant in each plot ? Suitable sites for buying trees ?

Im a relative novice so I'm not sure about rootstocks, pollination etc

Have you visited Gordon Castle in Fochabers? They are restoring their gardens and have lots of different fruit trees, especially apples but also plums and, I think, some pears too. It's an inspirational place.

We have a small number of fruit trees which do variously well depending on the weather. Last year we had a bumper crop of plums (Victoria) but apples did quite badly and no pears at all. This year, a handful of everything but nothing in great quantity. So much depends on the weather at the time of pollination. I've never been brave enough to try a cherry tree, though the wild ones can do really well around here.
