in my 30 odd years living in africa dreich was just a quaint old scots word distant in my memory , never dragged out and used.
but as I sit here this morning in this scottish autumn dreich is the only word that comes to mind.
today the world is dull drab grey, that odd scottish mixture of heavy mist and low cloud. I know the sun is up now because the top bit of the grey is slightly lighter than the rest. visibilty is maybe a hundred yards, the forest I know is there is just a dark blob,
dark and damp, I almost expect the slugs to come by on their bicycles ,
dreich a simple word but so intensely descriptive, evocative.
