Is Gardening a Hobby?

No, it's true JJ, I look after our shared back green, which is definitely not my hobby, but is definitely gardening, and I look after my allotment which is definitely gardening, and is definitely my hobby...

The days are gone when I do anything that I don't enjoy - like ironing and decorating!

I either pay someone to do it or it doesn't get done.

I've whittled down my hobbies lately as I haven't got time to do my day job with the amount I had.

Three of them have a tangible return though, gardening, metal detecting and fishing!

Online book stores and magazines list gardening books under Hobbies. I don't think of "gardening" as a Hobby - its a way of life.
Maybe if I specialised in something like Bonsai or carnivorous plants or developing new varieties of fruit? Instead, I grow food - and maintain the outside areas of my home in a style that appeals to me.
Maintaining the indoors - like cleaning and decorating isn't a hobby so what is the difference. How does a necessity become a hobby?

Just curious what you think? Is gardening a hobby?

I class it as such, because when I have to spend money, I justify it to myself with, "well it's lot cheaper and rewarding than other hobbies."

For me, it's a mental health intervention...

For my late Mum, who was of the watch Monty, potter in the GC, water in the greenhouse variety of gardener, it was also a passion, way of life, and intervention. It was part of who she was - an amateur botanist, a plantsman, who knew the latin name of every flower in her garden, and most growing in the wild, too. She didn't work physically hard at it, because she has disabilities, and she didn't dedicate all her time to it, because she had other commitments, too. But it was always part of her, and I think it was less of a hobby to her than it was to me.
