Just think of sitting by the fire with a table-full of numerous seed catalogues, a notebook, a pencil behind your ear and a glass of something to help you think. Don't know if this will help but I do cross-stitch pics so when I'm planning one, I draw the individual items on graph paper, cut them out, then use Prit-stick to stick them on my design template (also on graph paper). This way if something is in the wrong place it can be moved until I've got it right.
