  • My Beetroot entry for the GYO Veg Show Sabotaged

Collected beetroot from the allotment last night. Put them in a bowl of water this morning to clean, went to Asda, came back round an hour later and went to clean them off to photograph. DISASTER - One of my group of 3 matched beetroot had no leaves. Daughter had taken them off and fed them to the guinea pigs!!! Daughter in disgrace - apologised profusely, but I have to admit I did see the funny side. Thankfully I did have a couple of spares in the shed, so had to use one of them. Still don't think the replacement was as good as the original, but there you go.

Taste test is still to come, Kernywyon! They do say the smaller the better, we'll have to wait and see. By the way, I started these in cell trays and then planted them on the lottie when big enough to withstand the slugs and snails. Last year I sowed direct on the lottie and got zilch!

Well you'll know where the aniseed balls came from in the Guinea Pig hutch!

Hope your putting them in for the competition Rustylady. I'm just putting in anything allowed. It's been a terrible growing year, but just as bad for everybody, so we just have to go for it. Lashing rain here tonight and never got above 13 degrees.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

I did laugh, after I'd calmed down a bit. It's not just one guinea pig, there are three of them, they technically belong to the daughter who beheaded the beetroot, but they live in a hutchandrun on my lawn. No, they haven't gone purple, though I think I probably did when I saw my beetroot entry minus the leaves.

Look on the bright side - at least she is looking after the animals! So many kids have pets and expect the parents to do the looking after.......
The weeks and the years are fine. It's the days I can't cope with!
