          • I ate my first leaf from Henry Hispi in a corn tortilla with a veggie burger. Yum

17 months ago, the Hispi cabbage seeds were the first veg seeds I bought. It's taken me all this time to actually get a cabbage out of them but I seem to have turned into a (novice) gardener along the way. I mean, I just bought some walking onions from Real Seeds! (Because they are obviously going to be ideal for a container gardener... <sigh>)

                • By pure chance happened to see a wren catch a tiny butterfly, while I watched with a cup of tea. Butterfly was flying close to the ground so the wren was half flying, half running.

                      • Spent an hour very early this morning watering the garden.
As an afterthought I put the thingy on spray and watered the leaves.
Fifteen mins later was fascinated watching all kinds of bugs on the leaves having a drink.

                          • After a horrible hot sticky day and a long walk home in full sun, I reluctantly dragged myself into the garden to do the watering. But I got a shock. All of my pots seem moist. I have no idea how, but they all looked recently watered, even though I last did them yesterday evening and it's been super-hot today.

So, I am happy with my unexpected evening off :-)

                            • Two of my sons found a baby bird in the garden and brought it inside as they were worried it would fall prey to a neighbourhood cat or our own dog.
I was a bit dubious but they made a little enclosure and asked me what to feed it. I happened to have an outbreak of lime green caterpillars on my indoor pots of basil so we used tweezers to feed the little bird (and cleared the plants of bugs at the same time. Later when I was checking up on my worm bins I noticed they had been disturbed. MY SON WAS TAKING MY BABY WORMS TO FEED THE CHICK. I calmly informed him that if I even suspected he was taking my baby worms to feed the chick he would find himself minced up and fed to the worms in recompense.
Anyway the chick was well fed overnight and first thing on Monday morning they phoned the vet to ask what to do. He told them to put the chick back. They did so and ten minutes later the mother bird appeared and led the chick away.
I have to say it was one story I was so sure wasn't going to end well. Cheers to the devoted parent bird.
