New Year's habits?

I was on the fence about starting a thread on this and then I saw Baldy's rant!

What do you do on New Year's day? I think of people eating certain foods on New Year's day but there may be other habits/customs/practices.

Do you do something special on New Year's day?

I don't do anything different except hang up a calendar and look for a new diary. Basically, I'm just a boring old hen who celebrates every day as if it were the start of a new year.

Hogmanay is a big thing up here, but we have had a quiet one this year, we're just back from a nice circular walk that takes in a cliff top view of the sea, just had a gammon butty, a couple of pickles and a bag of low fat crisps, hardly a ritual though.

VC, no I don't. I used to have some pickled herring on New Year's day. Dad used to make a pot of cream of potato soup.

Yesterday I made a pot of beans, ham and the ham bone, and a cast iron skillet of corn bread. (Of course it will be even better today when I reheat some.) That got me to thinking of traditions. Beans and corn bread might be a good ritual for New Year's days. Southern comfort food! I'm all for that.

That's the advantage of treating every day like the start of a new year. Your resolutions only have to last for a day I'm good at that.

I pick a ‘project’ for the year. This year’s is to get rid of the buried carpet at the top of our plot and build some raised beds there. I have been putting it off for far too long.....

Just saying Happy New Year to family and friends, putting the new calendar up, and probably having a roast dinner.

I prefer not to celebrate the New Year arrival at midnight, but to have a lovely cosy meal at home and just hunker down for the day.
Maybe phoning a few friends and family...or email them...then think of how I'd like to change my lifestyle a tad in the coming year.
Nope...not NY resolutions, but reflect on how I could approach things differently in the coming year.
One main thing for me this year is to try not to acquire things which will need recycling/ throwing out...particularly,when buying food in packaging.
I was also appalled at all the plastic Xmas junk I saw in the shops this,year....talk about polluting the planet

So yes, I think I try and focus on the year and years to come on NYD. No doubt I shall continue feeling that way ....
