  • Who will do the weeding

Came across an article and have picked some of it out
Artificial Intelligence:* Computers become exponentially better in understanding the world.* This year, a computer beat the best Go player in the world,10 years earlier than expected. In the U.S., young lawyers already can't get jobs.* Because of IBM Watson, you can get legal advice (so far for more or less basic stuff) within seconds, with 90% accuracy compared with 70% accuracy when done by humans. Watson already helps nurses diagnosing cancer, 4 times more accurately*than human nurses.

Autonomous cars: In 2018 the first self-driving cars will appear for the public.* Around 2020, the complete industry will start to be disrupted.
You don't want to own a car anymore.* You will call a car with your phone, it will show up at your location and drive you to your destination. You will not need to park it;*you only pay for the driven distance and you can be productive while driving.* Our kids will never get a driver's license and will never own a car.
It will change the cities, because we will need 90-95%*fewer*cars for that.* We can transform former parking spaces into parks.

Agriculture:* There will be a $100 agricultural robot in the future. Farmers in 3rd world countries can then become managers of their fields*instead of working all day*in their fields.
Aeroponics will need much less water.* The first Petri dish that produced veal is now available and will be cheaper than cow produced veal in 2018.
now, 30% of all agricultural surface is used for cows.* Imagine if we don't need that space anymore!
There are several startups who will bring insect protein to the market shortly. It contains more protein than meat.
It will be labeled as "alternative protein source" (because most people still reject the idea of eating insects).
Business opportunities: If it doesn't work with your phone, forget the idea.***Any idea designed for success in the 20th century is doomed to failure in the 21st century.
MY question is with all the changes forecasted "Who will do the weeding in my garden"

There'll be no weeding to do as the world will be so overpopulated that there will be no room to spare for gardens. There'll be a museum of vegetable and fruits that were eaten in the 20/21st century. Maybe there'll be a stuffed "gardener" with a hoe in his/her hand and people will come to stare and wonder what they could have used such a primitive tool for.
People will evolve too, they'll change shape with big bottoms, shrivelled, useless legs and their fingers will only be used for keypads - and nosepicking.
A bit like the Mekon in Dan Dare??

^^^^^^ I remember reading about him, in the Eagle, that was a weekly comic that children used to read pre TV and Xbox etc.

You could be right DW! Apart from the nose-picking, it could be me.

There's a recent film - "Downsizing" where scientists develop a process to make shrink people (to about 5" tall" so that they take up less space on earth. Not sure whether the weeds shrink too!

Weeding will be unnecessary in the "Brave New World" where everything will be perfect for you, and so we won't have "weeds" - just "plants of alternative usage".

BTW hope you're all putting some money away, as the rumour is the new 2040 "air tax" is going to be set eye-wateringly high (non-breathing entities will receive a special exemption from this).

Is there a plant that doesn't have a use - in some way or to something?
                        I've pondered this often!

A weed to a gardener tends to be a plant in the wrong place but plant it in the "right" place and it ceases to be a weed. Like people who feel they don't "fit" in the work, place or lifestyle they are in but when they change to something different, life improves and, ultimately, they "fit".
Perhaps we should care more about the feelings of weeds - imagine spending your life being poisoned, uprooted, decapitated just because your parents' seed landed in the wrong place.

Join me in defending the rights of weeds - become a member of the SPCTW (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Weeds).

The Gardening Weeding Robot is nearly here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpR3lWl8j1w
                              $250 - $300

The 'Tertill' by Franklin Robotics is an autonomous robot that takes care of those pesky weeds growing in your garden. It's solar-powered and waterproof, so you can leave it outside without worry.

It uses technology similar to the Roomba, with added sensors that detect the difference between garden plants, which it avoids, and weeds, which it shreds with a trimmer.
