Jasper Fforde is the author of "The Eyre Affair" and 4 sequels. The main character is Thursday Next, a Literary Detective (she looks for forged first editions and other such dodgy stuff.) Set in an alternative 1980s, where literature has the place religion does in the "real" world, so committed Baconites knock on your door to convince you Bacon wrote the works of Shakespeare. Very, very funny, surreal and clever. Lots of the action takes place in the Bookworld, the place where books are constructed, you can be attacked by adjectivores, and irony levels are carefully monitored. Best read in the right order, though there are two "Nursery Crimes" which pretty much stand alone, being within the Bookworld - if you ever wanted to know who killed Humpty Dumpty, read "The Big Over Easy".
If you like Pratchett, you'll like Fforde. Check out jasperfforde.com for lots of clever stuff.
PS There are pet dodos in Thursday's world...
