I belong to 5 forums and 2 newsgroups. For those unfamiliar with newsgroups, they were the precursors to forums - or is it fora? I go to 3 of the forums including this one every morning. The other two aren’t as busy so I might visit the once a week. The 2 newsgroups are ones I belonged to when Brian was still alive and I visit them to keep up with some of his friends.

As to why this is my favourite, it’s friendly, makes me laugh, I love the GR, helpful - where else would I have got help to make a chocolate cake when I was in Spain? Thanks Snoop. And we all share the frustrations of weather and life getting in the way of our hobby.

Thank you all for the answers.

I've now worked out that yes it is about 'outdoor' activity but its the people that matter most.

I now have a huge extended family that will teach, laugh and guide me. Something I'd never had before.

Reading the replies, coffee in hand and sun blazing makes a perfect Sunday morning........

                    Hugs lumpy.

The first forum I’ve ever joined.

Mainly as others have said the people as you get advise with a hint of humour and more importantly honesty rather than the gardening books that paint the perfect picture.

Also never know what random thread will pop up next.

                        Warning....Warning.....Warning

                        As I've been thinking again.

I know most new Grapes lurk around for however long before taking the plunge and becoming official.
Does anyone think that threads like this one etc put people off becoming regular contributors?
I think it's great when a new family member takes part in many of the growing and general threads as it adds to our unique forum but not everybody is like Cad and Balders who plunged straight into to all kinds of topics.

The reason I'm asking is that when the Gardeners Rest opened last year there was a comment by a new Grape that implied 'in crowd', 'private jokes' and uninviting for anyone other than the well establish members like VC, me, GL,MH etc

I think it is more about the type of person you are rather than being a newbie. I was happy to jump into threads when I joined but I haven't a hope of keeping up with the GR crowd even now. Also as much as I hate to admit it (as I love the vine) - one forum does not fit all. I would have thought the forum being active, friendly and varied was quite prominent rather than clicky. Now I say that I do remember someone say they felt it was clicky when they first joined but that was a very, very, very long time ago. So anyone lurking we aren't clicky really........we are a family ready to welcome you

Try to set up an alert for when veggiechicken comes on, that way you will be warned that there will be a random thread coming up, but not what it will be
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

As a pretty new member, it is very clear that there is a core group of people who have been here for a long time and know each other well. However, that hasn't made me feel unwelcome. People here are friendly and respond quickly to the silliest questions.

Cliquey would be if you ignored newbie posts and questions and made very sure never to hit 'like' for one of their posts. That hasn't been my experience here at all, or I wouldn't have stuck around!

It felt very clicky when I first joined but some of the people & mods that made it feel that way (IMO) have left, so it seems much more easy going now.
In the early days it often seemed that my way of gardening was thought unacceptable, I was forever being told that what I was doing was wrong, for the soil, for the environment, for bees - I was just always wrong
So I went missing for a while. When I tried again it seemed that attitudes had changed IYKWIM and apart from their being too many ads on the site I like it here now.

Oooooh hazelnut chocolate cake....drool...now where was I ?
