Thanks, guys. The real problem with the dog will be afterwards. At the moment, she doesn't know she's not well. Just got a funny bump on her leg, but she doesn't even worry it. Afterwards, she'll have to have one of those huge hood-cum-collar affairs and she'll be wearing it for a month. She's a busy dog, loves a mission, so being stuck in that will be awful for her. Plus, she and her brother are extremely close and he and her mum will be wanting to clean the wound all the time. It's going to be a trying time all round.
Thanks for the soup advice, Nicos. I've decided on onion, broccoli stump (florets for lunch today), courgette, lamb's lettuce, some chickpeas for starch and a bit of blue cheese for extra flavour and acidity. Reckon it'll turn out quite nice. I have a soup I call 'green' soup for the assorted bits and bobs that are left over. I'll just say it's that. French soup sounds far too grand for what I have in mind!
