    • Good morning, there was rain overnight and now 15c with a little bit of blue sky showing through, won't get much done today as I am up watching the boy's, and need to take one of them to music lessons later, enjoy your day, and remember pass on a smile, the person who receives it may be feeling a lot worse than you

        • I have been meaning to ask this question for a while, but have been so busy
With the push to avoid the use of throwaway plastic, there have been suggestions of using soil blocks, now soil blockers are a bit expensive, as they are made of metal, several years ago there was a plastic blocker on the market which worked quite well, unfortunately I no longer have it and was wondering if anyone knows where I could purchase one

          • Morning all - still no rain but its cloudy and one of them is dark. Probably moving in the wrong direction!!
I'm waiting for the nice man to arrive and fit a new actuator head. Potty will know what I mean. I had no idea what it was yesterday either. Every day you learn summat new and feel the need to slip it into the conversation. Astound your friends and strangers by inviting them in to see your new actuator head.
Hope he arrives soon, I have twitchy fingers needing to touch soil.
Have a sunny/rainy day - delete as applicable.

            • Hi Rary, there's a thing I've learned today. I'd never heard of soil blockers. Do they really work?

I've come across this lot on the web, but have no experience whatsoever of the things themselves or the company:

Edited to add: Sorry, Rary. I've just reread your message and it occurs to me you want a plastic soil blocker, not a metal one, and these are made of metal.

              • Have a look on youtube, quite a few DIY options for soil blockers, if you're ok with that!

I'll stick with my paper pots for now

                • Thanks Snoop and yes the reason for plastic is that it would be cheaper and Thelma I have looked on YouTube for making blockers and have found that the tops of small spray cans make the best blockers but it was the convenience that comes with the manufactured one that I was after, but I may like you stay with the paper pots

                        What are you actuating?

                        • Presumably central heating/water heating zones? Can't think of another use in a house.

                          • Its an Actuating head - but, initially, I thought it said Activating Head and when I goggled that it didn't seem at all relevant to whatever the nice man was doing in the cupboard. I left him to it and said I'd be in the kitchen when he'd finished.

                            ...........and yes, Thelma knows

                            • Oh, so you have let him out of the cupboard now? - I did wonder how long you'd actually keep him locked in there

                              • He was very tall. Not sure how he folded himself up enough to fit in the airing cupboard!!
I'm anxiously waiting for 7.30 - to see if the actuator talks to the boiler.

This afternoon, I've been to the bank, sorting out some redundant accounts in the "office". Can't remember what I said, something about the excitement of speaking to a real person, and the lady adviser said I needed to get out more. I didn't tell her about my exciting morning at home, thought it might be too much for her, as I'd been trying to persuade her to retire early. Maybe she thinks working is preferable!
