  • Amorous slugs!

I was greeted by the sight of two amorous slugs on the path when I went out into the garden this morning. God knows how long they'd been 'at it', possibly from the night before but they stayed entwined for another couple of hours before parting & wandering off looking for something to nibble having worked up an appetite!

Bleurgh!! Did you just let them wander off, or did you "dispose" of them?

I let them wander off O.W.G., it felt too mean to 'remove' them. Everyone keeps telling me the big fat slugs do less damage & only eat rotting vegetation as well so I feel a bit guilty when I get rid of them. I do grab them at night & bag them up in the bin if I spot them on the plants so the lovers could end up there if they're not careful.

You really should have dropped them into a bucket of salty water, or just sprinkled salt over the pair of them - just think how many more slugs you are going to have to cope with now!! I'm all for live and let live - I sow/plant extra for the birds etc, but a few things I have no time for - a few examples = slugs, snails, wasps

                5 inches long? That's a tiddler Headfry!
There's plenty for them to eat in my garden Piglet, I just hope they stick to the fallen leaves etc. & they do seem to love the flowers, buds, fruits & leaves that fall off the passionflower, unfortunately that's right outside the back door & so I'm usually greeted by a couple of fat giant slugs whenever I go out the door & O.H. has been known to stand on them when not looking - sometimes in his bare feet!

It must be the time for slug lurve - they were at it on our back lawn this morning, as well. On the front path, there were a whole pile of them eating one of their fallen comrades. Urgh!

Do you think we could encourage this sort of slug cannibalism? They could reduce their own numbers until they've all gone!

When I walk down to our chicken enclosure in the morning, I pick up all the slugs on the way and my chickens get a lovely breakfast....

I found two slugs "at it" yesterday so one of the hens got a buy one get one free deal!
And yes I see the odd leopard slug, about as attractive as slugs get.
And if you've given them to chickens, its really rather horribly surprising how much insides there are in a slug...
And I watched one of them scarf down one of the 6" jobbies almost in one go - either that or get it stolen from your very beak by your so called sisters.
                        best wishes

And when the hens squabble over a 'tasty' beakful of slug - boy do they go for each other!
The weeks and the years are fine. It's the days I can't cope with!

Do you get the slug relay race with your hens, poor slugs but it does make me smile to see one of them scuttling round trying to keep hold of the slug with two avid thieves hot on her tail.
And although they will try and steal the slugs from each other they don't quarrel over them. Enid who is quick off the mark delivering pecks if Dorothy or Barbara scratch around in "her" patch seems to be quite resigned to having blackberries and slugs whipped away.
