I'm with Seasprout. Sorry, cannot get excited about it. Its all fake. All of it ... Santa, the tree ... the occasion itself. Birth of Jesus ? Come off it, its all about presents.

      Bah humbug!

I much prefer Bonfire Night, or the first day of spring.

depends how you look at it, each to their own, I respect that. must say though that even though I have kids I don't do the mad last minute dash to the supermarket, think carefully about presents that I buy and start early so that i can spend time with the kids making christmas cards, decorations etc etc. i also save throughout the year to pay for christmas, don't do the bang it on the visa we'll pay in a few months, but that's me, I don't go mad, keep it simple but nice. kids only believe in santa for a few years now, i intend to make the most, i remember what it felt like when i was a child and how excited i was, it was a nice feeling and that's what i pass onto my children. the look on their faces and their excitement is priceless something money can't buy and something i can look back on and remember fondly for years to come.

Nope, you're not. The only good thing about Christmas is that we have passed the Winter solstice, and it starts getting lighter for longer each day!!

The 2008 growing season awaits, and its got to be (just ruddy well got to be) better than this year!!

yep, with you all the way. I do make the effort for the little ones, but I think their birthdays should be more a cause for celebration. Children get far too much these days ... how many plastic dollies does a girl need?

I loathe the commercialisation of Christmas and actually find the fact that it's become a festival lasting several months quite offensive and horribly brash. I'm not religious but am guessing that it's even mome annoying looking from that perspective as it seems to have become a celebration of spending. I can see that spreading the cost of anything is a good idea and have no problems with making stuff in advance. However why are there already crackers for sale in the shops (saw them Bank Holiday weekend) when it was still August ie 4 months from the actual event. Seriously no need. As gardeners we should be more than aware of the seasons and I find it nice to keep in time with them, in the same way that I don't want strawberries in January, I don't want Christmas in August.

People keep saying that it's for kids and many people end up half bankcrupting themselves buying stuff that their kids don't really need or want and of which they have no understanding of the value. We bought our various God children Oxfam pressies the other year, you know goats etc. Most of them got it, especially the little ones and it was far more use than another doll / computer game etc.

Won't be posting on this thread again until December and maybe not then either!

PS I'm not a total killjoy, had all OH's family over on the day last year, at it was lovely, really enjoyed having them but know that if I'd been planning it for months I would have been seriously fed up by the time it actaully arrived and would have missed out on enjoying lots of things in between. Each to their own, I know but that's the way it is for me.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

My word Alison, you are leaning on an open door. I don't particularly hate Christmas, but I don't enjoy it. As I said earlier, the only good thing about Christmas is that the winter solstice has passed, and we are working towards more hours of light than dark, and the 2008 growing season becokns!!

I love this time of 'mists and mellow fruitfulness', but I hate the prospect of winter, cold hard frosts (even with climate change/global warming) they can happen!!

I like Christmas because I get 2 weeks off.

Oi, you lot - it says at the start of this section of the forum "keep it clean"! Talking about Christmas ALREADY - that counts as bad language.
Actually, I love Christmas, and have a huge amount of trouble persuading well-meaning people that I LIKE spending it alone. I get a real tree - I could do with two, I have so many decorations - Mum and Dad's from the late 50s onwards, and I add new ones every year. The tree lives in a bucket till Christams Eve. That way you haven't started blanking it by the big day. I take it easy - well, I do that most of the time, but at least I needn't feel guilty on Christmas Day. Listen to "I'm Sorry, I Haven't A Clue", either on the radio or a tape. Have a walk. Cook something a bit different. I'm trying not to wrap presents any more, it's such a waste. I don't like the very early start of it all - I'll excuse charities sending out catalogues, but not shops cashing in. And I can't stand "Santa Stop Here" signs. He's called Father Christmas, and he KNOWS where to stop.
