  • Water theft deterent

Seems this bout of drought has brought out the worst in some people on our plot.

Most people round here are on water meters - some are bringing water from home to fill up their butts and water their plants. My butts are about to run out so will be in a similar situation in a day or two. Anyhow it seems there are some swine who are helping themselves to other people's water. Really does feel like theft if you've seen your meter spinning, loaded containers into the car, carried containers to your plot etc etc - then some so-and-so helps themselves when you aren't there.

We'd probably kick them off the plot it they get caught red-handed but that isn't likely to happen I suppose. I might encourage people to get a cctv camera, though that does feel a bit big brotherish. I expect we'll put up a sign to say "Don't steal other people's water you swine! If you're caught your off" but those that do won't pay much attention I guess.

So I was just pondering filling one of my butts up with something that looks like water that would effect the plot of the aforementioned miscreants. As we're an organic site I can't use weed killer... Perhaps a strong saline solution would do the trick. Or sugar solution - that might attract wasps and / or leave an obvious residue... Any other ideas?

What about some sort of dye that only becomes visible after a bit of exposure to the sun - a (little) bit like the stuff they put into swimming pools to deter "unpleasantness"? (Its getting a bit Mission Impossible but I'm on a roll...)

    Meh!

I suspect the thieves would smell the comfrey but its a thought - I've got a big weed butt I could possibly filter then add to a clear looking butt. Wiring of taps would have to be on a grand scale and we'd have to secure the tops too... I'm thinking along the lines of a single honey trap...

Do you think they're dunking or filling from the tap?
Just wondering about some plastic snakes floating in the butt, or attached to the lid so that when its lifted its jumps out, or even stuffed up the tap?

Supposing it’s someone who likes to wander about the plots, they stop & see your plants look a bit thirsty & wilting so they use a bit of your weed killer water on your plot? I don’t know what I’d do but a camera provides proof? A letter might deter them if they think hidden cameras have been installed at a cost to prosecute the thieves?

                  Bordeaux mixture is organic...

My dad told me about japes at university involving fire extinguishers that worked by mixing two liquids together to create foam - put one in the toilet bowl and one in the toilet cistern and wait for ensuing hilarity...[1]

Something like that would take a lot of rigging up (jug floating inside, tied so that it tipped when the level dropped). But it would be very funny...

[1]FTAOD my father was not actually involved in such pranks. Or at least so he tells me...

There are dyes used in ponds to stop algal growth.

They might leave tell tale traces. Try asking vendor.https://www.hydra-aqua.com/liquid-po...RoC2U4QAvD_BwE

Maybe some food colouring- the stuff that comes as a paste for colouring icing, super concetrated so one tub (£3ish) goes a very long way. If you have dark green water butt then no one would notice the colouring until after they had dunked... hopefully stained fingers, or blue plants would provide a clue?

Also, I think you can get dye designed for working out where surface water drains go, and designed to be safe for wildlife in whichever watercourse it ends up in

My honey pot trap wouldn't be anywhere near my plot...

^^^ so would be 'collateral damage'

I'm leaning towards the dye idea - perhaps with a bag or two of sugar - I've also got a flat(ish) roofed shed so I might spend an evening lying atop it with some binoculars - though the plot is betwixt housing so I might have to wear full camo as well to avoid issues with the neighbours...

What about a packet of Loo Bloo stuff. If you use enough it makes the water a very dark blue.
