  • Economies of scale

I can't continue in the rant thread so I will continue here. I understand economies of scale. But I will take a punt that the same percentage of customers at more rural retailers want the same products as the urban customers. What happens if you can't get what you want locally you will shop elsewhere. And if you shop elsewhere you will get all your shopping elsewhere. This means that money leaves the local economy. I know most of it leaves anyway but some of it stays as the people working there are local.

And VC that was a low blow. We aren't a third world country and it's not really a first world problem, just an economic annoyance.

To me, ranting because you can't buy Banana Instant whip is very First world when there are people who can't put any food on their table.
You started your rant about locally grown food being sold on to supermarkets and I was with you at that point. Turning it into a rant because you couldn't buy Seafood cocktail and Banana instant whip made no sense whatsoever to me.
Rural villages don't have a choice of shops, they're lucky if they have one.
We'll never agree on this because we have a different outlook on what is essential and what is a luxury.

VC, I think almost everything on the rant thread could be considered a first world problem.

I rant about my job, when I'm lucky that I have the opportunity to have a stressful professional job at all seeing as many women in developing countries have no access to education, menstrual supplies, contraception etc. that will allow them to seek employment outside the home.

There's a rant about horseflies when people all over the world are dying as a consequence of mosquito bites.

There's a rant about a pick-pocketing when those people were lucky to be on holiday and have anything worth stealing.

There's always someone worse off than you. That doesn't make it wrong to be peeved about things you do encounter in your otherwise privileged western life. I may not agree with the underlying principles of some of the rants on that thread because I have different opinions/politics/likes/dislikes etc. but that doesn't mean that I get to dismiss what someone feels.

If it had been a thread about the lack of resources in an African country plagued by years of civil war, drought, western exploitation etc. and someone had thrown in a comment at the bottom saying, "Yes, I have that same problem in my rural Oxfordshire village where I can't get hold of banana Angel Delight!" then I think you may have been justified in your comment. But it was a thread for minor rants on a gardening forum, so was it really fair?

(Edit: In case it isn't clear, I think it's absolutely fine to rant about horsefly bites and pickpockets!!)

I'm not getting into an argument about this with you or anyone. I've read too many "rants" on here already.

It was a minor rant about something petty and I’m not going to apologise for it. Now if you want a major rant I could go into famine and war in other countries. The disgraceful way some of our less fortunate people are treated in this country. The unfair way people are discriminated against in various ways all over the world. All this is too heavily political for a forum such as this.

51 years ago when I was going to help turn a disused mansion house into an hotel in Ireland I was told "its a great place but do not discuss religion or politics". I followed that advice and had a great time.

Likely understanding the terms would help:
First World countries are those aligned with and influenced by America.
Second World countries are those aligned with communist/socialist countries generally Russia.
Third World are the rest that ignore the other 2.

The terms are political "orientation" not wealth or food or whatever. Also looks like the options were defined by an American, they like considering themselves as "first".

                    Interesting how mistranslation occurs.

Haven't had banana instant whip for years.

How about someone lock this. It is pointless.
