  • we've had cat doo-doo ...

... now I've got Rotty doo-doo to deal with.

Woke up this morning to find next door's rottweiler had crapped a massive dog-bomb on OUR BACK STEP !!!
The owner is totally irresponsible...the dog is locked up in the house 24/7 and howls and barks all day. He leaves the back door open so it can toilet, but he doesn't have a gate, just a small suitcase to block the shared-access pathway - it can clearly just jump over into our yard. Absolutely terrifying. but so is the owner, so I can't say anything.

What to do? If the RSPCA were involved, he would know it was us that reported him, as we are the only neighbours.

To be honest it sounds like something the RSPCA need to know about as the dog appears to be being neglected. I know that the mess you've had isn't nice but I do pity the poor dog, you do wonder why people get one if they're not going to take care of it properly. I can understand your concern about reporting it but it might be a good idea to ring them up and have a chat, they must come across awkward situations like this and may have a may of addressing it without it being obviously from you. Good luck.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

can understand this, in my previous house a little old dear use to walk past my house every day and let her delightful little dog deposit last nights tea outside my front door every time. i had two of my own dogs at the time and would never let them do this, if they did i would certainly have cleared it up. maybe the rspca can have a chat but maybe you need to keep a log maybe a couple of pics (not nice i know) but then you may have a case. even though i confronted this woman on a few occasions i eventually found out where she lived and spoke to her daughter about it. it never happened after this, i did say i had reported this to the enviromental dept at local council.

My mother was concerned because there was a dog barking most of the day and night at the back of her bungalow. Eventually the dog warden turned up and asked her to keep a diary of when the dog barked. She said off and on all the time. Anyway two weeks (of sleepless nights) later the warden returned but could do nothing.

Turned out there were two dogs who were left all day (while he was at work) to go in and out of the garage. In the evening he went out (must have a social life) and finaly let them in about two in the morning.

They still bark and he knows who has objected.

Rotty's aren't the monsters they are made out to be. It's the owners who are to blame, and this one needs reporting. If you can't look after a dog properly (any dog) then you shouldn't even think about owning one. Don't think about the owner, think about the welfare of the animal and report them/him/her

Personally I would post it through his letterbox two sheds, seriously though I would get the RSPCA and stand up to him people like that arent usually as frightening as they seem. we had horrible heighbour problems for several years and it just continued to get worse so I stood up to them this year and we have had no problems since (perhaps I look like a roweiler!!) mind you on the bright side it introduced me to allotmenting to escape the hell we lived in.

Firstly, Rotties (as has already been said) are the vicious dogs the press etc makes them out to be. They can be loud and their size can be intimidating, but often are big softies.

Secondly, ring your local dog warden. They can investigate complaints and are slightly more accessible than the RSPCA (who can take over a month to get to visit a problem). They will not tell the person who complained (my neighbours will know it is me as soon as they hear the issue).

I called our dog warden last thursday re a neighbours dog, and they are going to visit them today.

Thanks OWG. I am not afraid of dogs, and like Rotties in particular, but next door's is loose in the yard with only a 18" high suitcase separating her from me, and she objects to me passing her, with a big growl and bared teeth. I HAVE to go past, its the only way out. The owners always say "she won't hurt you, she's being friendly" but the press is full of cases where "friendly" dogs have turned on people, even their owners.

Thanks for the tip on dog wardens, I will look them up.

Two Sheds, report it to the council immediately, it's the only way. They will visit and if nothing improves they will provide you with a recording device which you use to record the noise. If it's as bad as you say, then they will warn the owner once and then remove the animal.

Secondly, if the dog is not seperated from your propertly, they will absolutely insist the neighbour provides a fence or whatever is required to stop it coming onto your land.

Dont put up with it, do something about it however hard it may be.

Surely your landlord has a responsibility in all this?

                      Or,better still,under his doormat!!Or,even better,under his car door handle!
I can tell you though that phoning the R.S.P.C.A.will be a complete waste of time. The dog isn't actually being ill-treated so they will do nothing.(unless you can rustle up a camera crew and Rolf Harris) Your best bet is your local council who will decide if the dog is being a) a noise nuisance b) an enviromental health issue or c)a danger to the public.
Unfortunately it is not unlawful to leave a dog all day and half the night as long as it is not suffering as a result(though how anyone could tell is beyond me!)
If he has food, water and access to outside,he will be deemed to be a happy dog!!
We have many dogs(I won't tell you how many!) and I work nights and my beloved days, just so they are not left alone. We also don't have holidays, days out etc. for the same reason.
The only solution I can come up with is to put a higher obstacle in his way and if you can find the kindness in you(remember, you'll go straight to Heaven) give him a few minutes of friendship through his day.

Yup, your Dog Wardens are part of your local council (ours come under the "Communities Team").

As Sebbster says, a dog owner has a legal responsibility to secure their animal on their property (this is what our issue with next door is). This means ensuring that any fencing/gates/walls etc are secure enough for the dog not to escape. A suitcase is not a secure barrier (I doubt it would hold our 11 week old puppy!).

                        Definetely ring your council/dog warden!

It's too tricky. I don't live here, I am a visitor. My OH doesn't want to rock the boat with his neighbour, so I really am at a loss. I know what I SHOULD do, but life isn't that straightforward.
I am actually thinking about feeding laxative to the dog so it carps all over neighbour's kitchen (repeatedly, until he rehomes the poor animal)

PLEASE!! Don't even think about that! It's not the fault of the dog but the owner.Feed him laxatives if you like, but not the dog.
You might get in touch with Rottie Rescue, who may be able to advise.Get in touch with Joanne Johnson,tel.01234 772542. E-mail,joanne.johnson17@binternet.com
She may have the solution to your problem or may be able to advise you further.
As to dog-owners fencing dogs in,which is surely in their interests,if they absolutely won't,then fencing them out is surely in yours!
This need not be expensive wooden fencing but those green plastic stakes and a bit of heavy duty plastic mesh would do the job.
And don't be afraid of people who have these "dangerous dogs". Most of their courage and bravado is actually in their dog.Without them they would be wimpish nobodys.
I would never own any of these type of dog but I would never be unkind to one. They are after all, dogs, they don't think, reason or act as one may want them to and the world must be a perplexing and bewildering place to them.
Hope your problem is soon solved!!
