  • Curiosity.....we know what it did

We all know what curiosity did.....but what about you?

I often find myself trying to guess grapes current or former occupations and wondered if anyone would care to share?

Before retirement I was an Environmental Consultant but my first job was a butchers boy

What do you or did you do?

I worked in a fish and chip shop part time, loved frying fish ( though my Mum didn’t like the smell of my clothes) I was still in school and I’m sure health and safety wouldn’t allow a youngster near the Friers these days! Then I moved onto the local Chinese takeaway, then I took a turn at pulling Boddingtons in Manchester finest pubs .
These jobs all supported my college years and I finally got my dream job as a designer/cad trainer/designer. Worked in Ladies and children’s wear, denim and outerwear/ coats.

^Eeh, Lumpy. Big virtual hug from me to you.

In my case: first job was washer-upper, currently a translator. In between, more things things than I can probably remember: maker of coffee (sounds odd if I say coffee maker), waitress, KFC general-purpose do-all kind of person, cleaner, teaching, NHS, DHSS, local authorities and a couple of things Lumpy lists. Never worked in a pub. Very odd that. Probably spent more time than was good for me on the other side of the bar.

I'm studying for a degree in health sciences through the Open University and will be finished in about 6 weeks.

For a couple of years I worked with people who have learning disabilities but the stress was starting to make me ill. It's a shame because the actual work wasn't really a problem, there just never seemed to be enough staff, the turn over rate was incredibly high and the one family seemed to think the place should be run like a boutique hotel and did nothing but submit complaints over such nonsense like us buying frozen vegetables. It was only supposed to be a 'nice little part time job' whilst studying part-time but it was taking over my life so I decided to leave and concentrate on my studies.

I might try to get work in a laboratory or clinical research but I'm trying not to think about it too much as the thought of re-entering the workplace is a bit stressful after everything that happened in my old job.

My first 'job' was when I was about 7. My mom and dad had a newsagents and grocery shop. It was my job to drop the papers off to the older customers especially in bad weather. If it was really bad they would give me little shopping list and I'd drop their shopping into them.

After they had sold that I didn't have another job until I was about 16 and that was at a nursing home in Scotland. My parents had moved up there to do their version of the good life.

From there It was back to Yorkshire to work in my parents shop, then to college and funded myself by working in supermarkets on checkouts.

I've also had my own business, been to college, been on checkouts again and a cleaner.

At the moment I'm a lunchtime supervisor and a cleaner.

Ideally I'd like to be somewhere that I could be self sufficient for the most of my food and supplies. Part of my new 5 year plan

I went straight from school to working in a bank in the city.
I worked in banking and Life/Car insurance until I got divorced at 32.
Then changed my life, by moving me and the children further out of London. Did a return to work course for mums and then got a job calculating the amount of active drugs to put into tablets and capsules, mostly antibiotics.

So I suppose you could say all I've ever really done is maths
I took early retirement in 2004 Woo Hoo! Still love it!

This is an interesting thread. Love finding out a bit more about everyone.
So didn't work before uni, then I've been emptying bread from an industrial conveyer fed bread oven, that's fun in mid summer getting 18 loaves a minute out of tins, tins stacked, lids stacked and bread on cooling racks.
Worked a couple of summer residential courses with the national children's orchestra keeping the kids amused and under control while they're not learning and practicing music.
Graduated and left Cardiff to go and work in Bristol as a dental technician (making false teeth) by day and pint puller by night. Hopped around the country a bit doing that before back to uni for another 4 years before becoming a dentist.
Now settled down with mortgage other half and a rapidly growing baby who's desperately trying to become a toddler.
