I've used a smartphone app on my android phone for a while now to identify plants and trees etc and it's really quite good!
The essence of it is that you can take a photo with your normal camera, (especially useful if you're in a location with no connection to the internet) or from within the app.
The app then scans the picture of the plant and gives you three suggestions of what it could be.
It's helped me out loads!
