  • Ice Cream Makers

Has anyone bought an ice-cream maker?Do you use it and find it's worth it's weight in ice-cream?Or is it one of those"seemed like a good idea,but......" sort of things.
It isn't such a bind to make it in the old-fashioned way but I read that these machines make it better, creamier etc.
    Any ideas on this?

Hi Polly4A I’m a mug for gadgets (I’ve some I can’t even remember what they’re for! ) but the ice-cream maker isn’t favourite because its FF (“Faff Factor”) is too high. It was also an ice-cream maker that tried to poison me (the gel in the freezer compartment leeched into the ice-cream) but that was probably an unlucky one-off (Gelato make).

They basically churn the cream and additions as they freeze so to that extent are labour saving. The more expensive ones do both, the cheaper ones (as mine) require you to first freeze the ice-cream compartment in the freezer (if you’ve any room at this time of the year...)

But I don’t want to put you off, ice-cream machines certainly have their advocates on this List and it’s worth doing a search for “ice cream” for some imaginative recipes. As it sounds as if you already make ice-cream regularly it should prove worthwhile, if it only sees the light of day occasionally it’s more likely to become “one of those things” lurking at the back of the cupboard.

I have a Phillips ice-cream machine where you pre-freeze the bowl. I used this a lot when I had a large freezer with a space for the bowl to be in there ready for use whenever I fancied it. Sadly, big freezer has given up the ghost and there is never space in the little one for the bowl. Will say that the machine made wonderful ice-cream. Have never tried making it the old-fashioned way.

I've got two of the Philips ones. Use them a lot. I only make fruit based icecreams, don't do chocolate etc, but do like using gluts this way. Found a good fruit puree + sugar+yogurt with a little cream recipe that seemed to work really well and wasn't too fattening.
I just know I couldn't be bothered to do it the "proper" way, all that in and out of the freezer and rebeating business.
