  • Breville JE16 Juicer

We've bought this so that we can do something productive with the apples from 3 trees which have in past years tended to go to waste.

For a start we got it of Ebay for around £50 (inc. postage). There are many items like this sold on Ebay which are shop returns and cannot be sold again in the shop. I have had absolutely no problems buying a number of items this way at considerably reduced cost.

Anyway - this is a large juicer and will require a defined storage area ! It has a 750w (1 hp) motor and a large feeder so can cope with full sized apples (or full sized anything else within reason!) without a problem. The motor drives a rotating grater plate which does the chewing up and the mush is then thrown centrifugally against a stainless steel filter - the juice goes one way and the solid goes the other into appropriate collectors.

It works well - I can process a bucket full of apples in 20 minutes. This produces 5 to 6 pints of juice. The filtering is not perfect and the juice does have to go through the jelly bag to get rid of the sludge but I find that a minor problem.

This is a machine for 'production' volumes of veg / fruit; putting the odd carrot through will drive you crazy with cleaning up afterwards - two collectors, the top lid, the pusher, the grating plate and the filter all require washing after the juicing, so for half an hour's juicing, allow an hour for set-up, cleaning and post filtering. And also reckon on a certain amount of mess - you can't produce liquid from solid without a small amount of leakage.

We've only had the machine for a fortnight so cannot comment on it's long term life or use for other fruit/veg but so far it's doing well what it says on the tin.
