  • Rotary Compost Maker

    Hi everyone
A friend of mine has recently visited from the USA whilst in the garden he noticed I have three Ecomax compost bins but was surprised I had no rotary compost maker.
Does anyone own or has trialled:
    i) Compostflow system.
    ii) Mantis Compost Twin system.
I would welcome any comments I do appreciate the high cost.

    Many thanks.

Just a thought, it looks like a wonderful idea to have compost processed in a matter of days instead of waiting for months but do you have the amount of material to compost to keep the thing going

They look fantastic, but are very expensive. Also, agree with PaulW, if it's processing that fast can you keep up with it.

I must admit they look a bit gimmicky to me!

Next there'll be a swish version worked by a hand held remote!

If I have the space to put one in I would use it for something else.

After looking at the link, i think it would be easier to make your own space shuttle.

Someone did once suggest using an old washing machine and turning the drum by hand - don't think the project got any further than talking about it, though.

I know I'll be sticking with my Dalek bin.

I have a couple of Daleks, but my favourite is my old fashioned wood framed square(ish) home made compost heap (covered by old carpet). Produces the best results, even if it does take a bit of time. Shame I don't have enough room to put another beside it to turn one into the other and keep the process going. I just have to turn that one in on itself now and again.

If you're a DIYer and have a cement mixer handy, give it a new job to do mixing compost, they work great.

I have a CompostTumbler (known in the family as the Compost Tombola). It was expensive and quite hard work to assemble (I speak as a mere woman working on her own). So far the results have not been miraculous probably because I have not given it much attention. It comes with "recipes" which look too complicated. You have to put stuff in, in varying proportions, not necessarily available at the same time and where do you store it in the mean time. On the plus side you do not have to turn a heap.
My problem is that I think a need a shredder so that everything is cut up nice and small.
Can anyone recommend a not too expensive shredder that is reliable ?

My conclusion: if you have the money and the patience to use it properly, it probalby is
worth having. The double one sounds like a good idea too.
